hi all,

I am a newbie who just bought a new Sabenza 31 small plain last month. I love this blade and use it daily. Its my etc and I out it through its paces-no safe queen here.

I read a lot on these forums about my first high end knife and bam, I pulled the trigger after saving up for 3 months.

But..here is the rub..I love the knife love it but its just to small for me. I am an average guy 5ft 10, 170, average but it just feel small. I know it will perform as well as many Karger blades but I WANT the large 31 Sabenza so I am getting one.

But rumor has it Chris reeve is moving towards S45 this year?
I don't need the knife now. I am patient and can wait but don't want buyers remorse as I don't sell or trade things, I take my time and buy them, spend a lot of my hard earned money so it will be a keeper for me.

Will s45 be better for long term ownership? Will I not be able to tell the difference in the years I wouldn't the knife?

I have done my homework and I know the differences between the two.

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts/opinions, etc
Eric

You’d be just fine with S35VN.

I’ve got (and use) Sebenzas in S30V and BG42. Both great, both is use. Got S35VN as well, and even that prototype Inkosi in S45VN. All work just fine :)

I like the s35vn from CRK so I have no issue going for it
If you like a little bit more toughness don’t wait and go for the s35vn
If you want a little bit more edge retention you can wait for the s45vn
Really IMO both will be good

I'm very happy with my S30V and S35VN 21s. Don't really feel the need for a 31 that might be better than a 21 or might not be as good, if you follow the threads here. Now if the 31 was available in a new steel that held an edge longer, then I start to get interested. The other advantage to waiting is that there may be subtle tweaks to the design going forward.

Just wait. Mnandis this month will have S45VN and the rest of the line should soon too.

Since you started this thread wondering about S45VN, it’s obvious that you really want a CRK with S45VN. So, be patient and get one with the new steel.
Will you be able to tell the difference, probably not. Besides, something may pop up between now and then that catches your eye and you’ll know that’s the one you really want.

I think this is the right answer here.

1. Keep your small in S35VN.
Your tastes might change.

I spent 4 years favoring small knives but over the last year year I’ve gone full size. I’ll probably shift back to small at some point.

2. Be patient and wait for a Large in S45VN. You may or may not notice any difference in edge retention/toughness, etc, but somewhere in you brain the variety center will be activated.

((I’m going to be quite surprised if I notice a difference between the two steels in actual use.))

Thanks to all for your answers/opinions. Really appreciate you taking the time.
This is a great forum and a wealth of knowledge and the knife communnity is just an awesome groupe of people.
Who knew I would get bitten by the knife bug. I was a city slicker office guy in NYC for 25 years and now live in Florida and just love collecting, slowly!
Thanks again
Eric

It's not just the steel that makes a great knife but design&execution too. Sell it and get any large Sebenza, a complete Chris design made when Chris Reeve ran the place.

Update. I had no patience! I found online dealer who had a plain large sebenza 31 in stock. I bought it for 2 reasons

a. Wanted a large now and will have matching set of small and large sv35
B. Sales man said new s45 would be hard to get for a while. Could b months. Demand wil be through the roof. I didnt want to wait until this summer or fall

lastly i signed up for direct buy from chris reeve website amd will buy the new s45 when my turn comes.
Thanks for all your thoughts

Congrats friend.

Great choice - Congrats!
This gives you the option to get an S45VN one later. ;)
The small is all you need, the large all you want.
It is good to have an option, depending where you go.
