This landed in the UK toward the end of last week, after a $140 import charge it was mine ^_^

This is my first Rat and my first Mashed Cat Kydex (had a Busse Active Duty w/ Okuden sheath and a Busse Game warden w/ Buy Brown sheath) and it's fair to say I'm extremely happy.

Ordered the Mashedcat sheath the same day as my pre-order was confirmed so I've had it for quite a while. It's in a lovely dark OD colour that I have to confess, I mistook for Black upon first look in artificial light. Fit is awesome with a solid 'clunk' as the waki slips in.

Not sure how familiar folk are with the UK's knife / sword laws but we're locked down pretty tight. With regard to swords now you can only purchase swords with curved blades over 50 cm if they're traditionally made and you are a licensed martial artist or collector (this was brought in to prevent cheap 'samurai swords' being sold in surplus stores etc). Thankfully the Waki slips under the radar at a touch under 50cm blade , as pretty much the most sword you can now legally own without spending extortionate amounts on having one made in Japan.

Awesome bit of kit. Fantastic zombie killer! Absolutely no idea what I'll use it for besides mounting it in a 'in case of zombies' frame, but really glad I bought it :)

Anyway, thanks to Eric for getting it over before Christmas and to Mashedcat for the excellent sheath.

Beautiful waki! Is that the Black/Green and Tanker Grey color combo? If so, I think we we might have long lost brothers!:p

krazichinaman: Thanks. Yours too!

Yep - Tanker Grey and Green / Black G10.

I have to confess I've always preferred Micarta in the past but this is awesome.

Great pics, love the color combo!
I agree with you about the handles, that G10 is just machined BEAUTIFULLY .
Congrats' on the fun blade.

I am glad you were able to purchase one and that you are enjoying the purchase.

Below is a rant, fair warning, do not read it if you do not want to.

I am saddened by the knife/gun laws you are living with and by the fact that there may yet be similar laws passed here. It is my impression that those in the majority in the government believe that they are the only intelligent people in the nation and that they need to look out for the rest of us. Taking away our rights and freedoms seems to be, in their minds at least, for our own good.

There was a stabbing at a local school a few days ago. The kid who did it apparently did it over a girl (I could not honestly imagine even being social friendly with most of the girls I have dated much less be willing to do something like that 'for them' and give myself a lot of jail time). The district has vowed to toughen safety standards. Many here seem to think that if they make anything that could be used for violence illegal to own or possess then crime will go away. They do not seem to realize that most of the people who are willing to go that far will find a way to do it regardless of the method.

Sorry your government feels it has the right to take, a lot of, your money for allowing you the privileged to buy and own what you want even when it is legal. There has been recent talk in Congress about doing a V.A.T. here as well.

Alfaholic - I think it worked out at £85 tax, plus the courier takes a cut (about $20) for the privilege of collecting the fee for you.

Very nice blade there, I almost went for that combo.

VAT and all the other taxes we face here are a real pain in the ass. Between paying the lovely fee of $240 a year to own a TV (TV licence fee) and rather high import fees we're pretty nailed down.

With regards to the tightening of laws I couldn't agree more. I'm very fond of the saying; "Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscripti catapultas habebunt" or for people like me who don't speak latin ^_^ "When catapults are outlawed, only outlaws will have catapults."

locking folders here are legally classed as fixed blades (due to a quirk of british law), therefore the only knife you may legally carry (without good reasons: work, hunting etc) is a sub 3" slip-joint folder (so legally you can't even carry a leatherman wave).

Ask any cop and you quickly find that the bad guys aren't carrying Swiss army knives or slip-joints, they're carrying cheap lock knives, kitchen knives, sharpened screwdrivers or even autos (which have been totally illegal here since the 80s).

The logic really does standup that generally criminals, aren't really to bothered about breaking the law of the legality of their weapons and carry regardless. Whereas the law-abiding citizen complies and is therefore penalised via their choices of carry (I have a lovely small sebenza that I'd like to carry, but don't).

I entirely see what you're saying; The banning of samurai swords in the UK is another great example. I can see why at a very surface level, but when you did at all, you realise that the number of attacks with swords and such is in single figures. Let alone the number of injuries / deaths.

Sure you can argue 'well one life saved is one life', but it gets to the point of lets penalise all the folk who'd have legitimate uses / reasons for owning.

Certainly with the UK government it's all about the quick win. The actions that will make headlines and let it show that they're doing something, when realistically for the most part the laws like these have very little effect. After all, the type of person that will go kill crazy with a katana can do it just as easily with a straight sword or an axe - rather oddly the UK's law only bans swords with a curved blade over 50cm, so a broad sword is fine :/

First let me say when I first, quickly, read your reply, "Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscripti catapultas habebunt" looked like it translated into "for people like me who don't speak latin". Lol, that is a great saying.

I am amazed by the numbers of people who seem to believe that policies that are hurting other countries will work here. These same people seems to think there is nothing special about our country, but think that when WE enact these policies we will do such a better job at it that we will flourish.

As a side note, someone wrote a great article a while ago that seemed to be very anti-gun. At the end of the article, with all of its reportings of child deaths etc. it turned out that the statistics were talking about backyard pools and not firearms. They then gave the numbers for firearms, which were much, much lower, and then asked "If we are really doing this for the children..." The numbers of preventable deaths from outlawing automobiles is fairly staggering but most people like cars whereas not all like guns, knives, and swords so they are fair game.

I was lucky enough to be in the US in the summer which enabled me to pick mine up from a fried over there. No pics at the moment.

I too have been stung by charges when shipping knives into the UK. Through work and choice I visit the US a couple of times a year. I just try and store my blades with friends until then, then I pick them up on holiday or gamble and ship them uninsured.

Funny thing is ...majority voted for those clowns yet I have yet to find one person willing to admit that he/she voted for the government. The UK fuel prices are scary, self defense is a crime, laws run the gambit from stupid to idiotic. Yet they same party is relected

And then I would think the USA would learn but they end up dancing with Obama ...... and I don't know anybody who voted for Obama either ..... so where are those people found that vote for the clowns?

BTW, Thanx Eric. The black and tan/black G10 Waki is now living in Johannesburg.... and no, I didn't vote for the clowns in the government either :D

Funny, because I know quite a few people who post on Bladeforums specifically who voted for Obama.

They just choose not to talk about it, because they come to these boards to discuss knives, not politics

Plus, they know there are a bunch of guys just lining up to trash them if they dare go against the groupthink mentality of "with us or against us" that's so prevalent in this community. So they just sit back at their computers, silently rolling their eyes every time someone complains about "sheeple" and then 10 other people join in and say "yeah, stupid sheeple, they should all think exactly like we do, then they would be smart and independent"

So yeah, keep injecting your politics into unrelated discussions, and believe that everyone agrees with you just because they choose not to speak up, when they know speaking up will do no good. What does people voting for obama have to do with the sword laws in the UK, again?

(sorry for the OT, Eric - can we go back to discussing the swords now?)

Yes, please stay on the topic of the Waki.

No need to bring politics into our nice peaceful forum ;)

:D:D

Sorry if we went kind of off topic

Aubrey - Kind of agree. At least in the UK I think with regard to knives and swords every party is pretty much the same so a vote one way or the other is amounts to much of the same.

Shown the Waki to a few folk now and everyone is impressed, though they're still asking - "what're you going to use that for?" :D
