Wal-mart Online

With there being so many "fake" Spyderco's out there, I was wondering if the Spyderco's that Wal-Mart sells online should be a safe bet to be originals? I have seen some crazy good prices from time to time and it makes me wonder!

One would think that Wal-mart would only sell the real deal, but that is not always the case. Earlier this month, Wal-mart and other big retailers were accused of selling fake herbal supplements. Link. Knives and herbal supplements are obviously not the same thing, but one should always be aware of fakes irrespective of where they are purchased.

No need for the link. Walmart doesn't get free advertising.

Also I just checked one of the dealers here who help support the site and there is less than a five dollar difference.

I decided to call Spyderco and the lady I talked to said that they would NOT guarantee any Spyderco knife from Walmart as they buy a lot of their Spyderco knives through other distributors that Spyderco has no control over. She said that they have indeed seen fake Spyderco knives come from Walmart online.

The only online dealers that they recommend are BladeHQ and Culteryshoppe. She said there were others but I was comfortable with those two as I have ordered from them before.

Interesting!

Don't do it. I cringe at even reading a thread like this with Wal-mart and Spyderco even mentioned in the same sentence so many times! D'oh, I just did it again right there! :o :barf:

No place is safe, reading a guy got a fake para mil2 from cabelas the other day.
It sucks ya got to worry about getting a fake knife!

Thing is with some sites...the prices are too high.

I think what might be happening is scammers order a legit spyderco from ie; cabelas or wal mart, then send back a fake for a full refund then resell the real one and there only out what it cost to buy the fake....someone else orders their spyderco from cabelas or Walmart which sells sooooooo many items the are not able a fake from a real when the item is returned, and the send out the spyderco that some one returned to some unknowing customer.

MY understanding is that the ones from Amazon that are "shipped from and sold by Amazon" are supposed to be OK, word is that they buy them directly fom Spyderco.

That would only be an assumption and gamble on your part.
Read the sticky thread at the top of this forum section about knock-offs and fakes.

I can help set the record straight on this. Walmart has sold the Spyderco Tenacious as little as 3-4 years ago in stores (they still turn up on my reports now and then) and as long as it says "Sold by Walmart.com" on the website, it's real. We're buying those direct from Spyderco. If it's OpticsPlanet or Outfitter Country or some other third party, personally I'd stay away. I will agree that fakes and stolen/refurbed knives often show up in those third parties' distribution, but not in our direct line. You should see ZT go direct soon as well.

I was considering buying a couple of Spydercos off of Wal-mart's site, but when I looked carefully they often were sold through a 3rd party as you see on Amazon sometimes. I don't remember seeing any that were actually sold through Wal-mart itself, and ultimately I ended up buying different knives.

Personally I would stick to more knife-specific retailers. I've seen too many people end up with a fake Para 2 (or whatever) because they wanted to save a couple bucks compared to other reputable sites.
