I'm sure some of you have already developed opinions on the ever popular subject of Wal-Mart's business tactics. I just had to read this article for a college english class, and thought some of you would be interested in reading it. It is quite long, but has a ton of very good information in it.

We've roasted chinamart for a long time here on BF.

Hey maybe we need a new forum for it? :D

Instead of just posting a link to a article that you didn't write, why not tell us what you think about this off-topic subject?

Off topic ? well it's one of the factors that caused the demise of Schrade . BTW Wal-mart has another ploy. They have been using Bloggers for spreading their PR messages. They send info to bloggers ,some of whom print that info without comment and without mentioning that it came from Wal-mart !! Always be careful of information sources including bloggers who have been seen by many as a source for the REAL facts.

The county just above us is re-zoning a 235 acre potato farm for a 800,000 sqft.[ correct figures ] distribution center. Our venerable US Highway 17 is still 2 lanes in places. Our county estimates an increase of 5,000 more vehicles on the highway, with a great number of them semi-'s.
This company has eliminated almost all of the Mom & Pop food stores & are chipping away at Winn-Dixie & Food Lion.

Guess what, they are slowly pricing groceries up to the other store's level. What a bunch !

that exact article was the article that made me start looking at wally's business practices more closely, and eventually I stopped shopping there.

We had a Walmart distribution center open up here last year; it is also 800,000 square feet.

As bad as I hate Walmart, the distrubution center pays better than avereage wages, and every single person working there has a complete benefits package. No part timers there either, AFAIK. I know a couple of guys who work there, and they are completely happy.

Go figure. It is a far cry from a retail Walmart, where wages and benefits suck, and the help looks like most of them are on drugs or in rehab.

Raising prices after putting the competition out of business does seem a standard Walmart technique.

You want low prices at a Walmart? Go where they have major competition.

Such "information campaigns" aren't really new. Exxon-Mobil pays a good amount of money to support groups that attempt to cast doubt on global warming for instance.

You can count on this sort of thing when a lot of money is at stake. With some topics it's very difficult to get something that is truly unbiased.

To show you how long it has been since I entered a Walmart, I didn't even know they sell food there. I learn something new every day.
