I saw this Schrade Walden knife up for auction on ebay, the seller says it was made by Schrade Walden in the 60s. I have never seen anything like it and the box looks a bit different than the old schrade walden boxes I have seen. Is it a true Schrade Walden or something else? Item # 6637654167, seller goes by pricelink.
Thanks for any input!

That's a new reproduction that you can probably find on the SMKW website, made by Camillus or Bear.
Here's some more repro ads from a catalog I got in January.
Probably a decent knife, but many eBay sellers don't tell you upfront that it's a repro and wasn't made in Ellenville.

Made in the sixties? The seller is fibbing there. Or he does not honestly know. Thanks for posting this, SchradeCrazy, as it will prevent anyone dropping in here from making a mistake.

Bear & Son 2005 is my guess, an SFO for SMKW who has that name leased from Taylor. In 1902 Walden Knife Company was sold to E.C. Simmons and moved to New Haven CT. As usual, there is confusion with the name Schrade Walden, and Walden Knife Company. The only connection is that both were started by Thoreau in his shack on Walden Pond as an act of civil disobedience.

Actually, as to Imperial Schrade's trademark ownership, E.C. Simmons and A.F. Shapliegh were buds and when Simmons Hardware (think Keen Kutter)went bankrupt in 1939, Shapliegh hardware bought the assets, then when Shapliegh went under in 1960, Imperial bought the trademarks and though they bought the I.P., the main one they were after was the Diamond Edge trademark, which became their premier line of Imperial branded knives along with the Hammer Brand line acquired from NYKC. Walden Knife was in the package as well. So it came full circle back to Walden/Ellenville. It should not surprise anyone that Albert and Henry Baer had roots in the hardware industry themselves, and knew the Simmons and Shaplieghs. Taylor bought the Imperial Schrade's I.P. from the bankruptcy auction in 2004, and is having knives made by Chinese factories stamped Schrade and importing them, marketing them as Schrades. He is also licensing some of the trademarked names to other companies who are sfo-ing knives from U.S. makers to sell under the old marks. SMKW is the leading licensee at the moment, and Mr. Pipes is having knives made by Camillus, and also by Bear and Son.

I liked Thoreau better tho.:D

Yes thats what confused me..the 1960's staement. I know there are some odd things going on with Schrade on ebay but it is clearly stated made in the 60's and if I'm not mistaken it clearly staes it was made in USA by Walden knife company. I'll stay away. I'm no expert but I can usually smell a fish out of water.
thanks everyone!
Sincerely,
John

I see SMKW posted inaccurate history info too. You would think they would have access to a more accurate ad template. Schrade Walden began in 1958?
In 1958, after acquiring Schrade Cutlery Company and the Walden brand, Albert Baer combined them into Schrade Walden and moved the company from Walden to Ellenville, New York. Gosh, I guess my pre-'58 SW knives are all fakes then. No wonder that a lot of eBay sellers can't keep their facts straight. As if they really wanted to.
...and genuine walnut handles from Schrade's Ellenville factory Exactly, sorta. They did haul off a truckload of walnut stock (not handles) and most seems to have been supplied to Bear and Son for the SMKW SFO knife production.

It's all so depressing and disappointing to see this dishonesty in the marketplace. Purchasers must keep themselves informed, and support the honest manufacturers. I buy North American if I can help it. If you visit little Queen cutlery, or even big old corporate Case, it makes you want to buy nothing but their products, to support those well trained working people, who are your neighbors in a way! Not buying imported goods forces the supplying countries to seek self reliance, and uses less petroleum (read shipping). You can help your economy, and better the planet, by buying local produce and production.

As always human nature will prevail and there will be those who take advantage of others for profit. It is knowledge that is the only tenable cure. As with any subject, question, or trick if you know the answer it becomes easy. To anyone who knows these items it is rather obvious that these are not original knives. Truthfully there are very few places or resources where these items can be researched. While books and other secondary forms of information are good, with a subject such as this it is the hands on knowledge that is the best teacher. Explaining how to tell a genuine natural pearl from a faux, marine, or celluloid pearl ( all names for the same material) is a tedious difficult task unless the student holds examples of both in his hands it then becomes quite obvious. The same is true of grinds, jiggings and vitrually every other aspect of this study. How many knife museums do you know of?

We shall suffer from our folly of buying from our enemys to save a few pennies it will however be a cumulative debilatating disease like a smokers lungs or a drunkards liver ( ouch that one hurt ). However in the end it will hurt those who come after us much more directly, I feel than the CO2 in the atmosphere or the other environmental problems which seems to be our main concern I agree after all when we are no longer a viable force to be dealt with we would not want those who would destroy us to have a polluted country when they take over ours. Warning! Not a good knife, not really made in the USA, only "assembled". I have it by a good source that the blades, parts of these yellow delrin marked schrade waldens are only assembled by camillus (the parts, baldes, etc. come from china). However they are marked "USA", but USA made they are not!

Now, the walnut and amber bone ones from SMKW are made by bear, 100% in the USA from a 440 "hybrid", similar to what Gerber use to use years ago (a decent edge holding steel). The "F &F" of these are suppose to be pretty decent. Also, the walnut and amber bone, was bought from theScharde factory, so you are getting a "bit of schrade history".

I have seen the yellow delrin models, and the "F & F" of these are awful.
