Walgreen's - Vic Huntsman II

To anyone who lives near a Walgreen's Pharmacy - I've noticed that two Walgreen's stores in the north Denver area have marked down their Victorinox Huntsman II SAKs to a clearance price of $5.97, which is by far the lowest price I've seen for a Vic SAK with this many blades.

I purchased several for stocking stuffers this holiday season!

I don't think I've ever seen knives sold at Wal-Greens...

Me neither. I guess I'm not very observant or it could be because I rarely visit a Walgreens. Anyways, thanks for the tip!

When I visited a local Walgreens today, I could onlly find the Sportsman II and the Classic SD. The Sportsman II was $5.99. I never knew that Walgreens even sold SAKs until the OP's post. :)

Thanks for a great "heads-up" on the SAK sale at Walgreens, MG_Saldivar! You've saved several/many people a bunch of money! (I've cleared-out my local Walgreens of their SAKs.)

The original price at Walgreens for a Vic Classic SD was $12.99, and the Vic Sportsman II was originally priced at $9.99. I got a couple of Classic SDs for $6.59 apiece, and a couple of Sportsman IIs, one for $5.99 and one for $5.19 (this lower price was at a store that hadn't put reduced-price tags on the knives so she needed to look it up...).

What I want to know is why the heck does a Classic SD cost more than a Sportsman II, on-sale or not? It makes no sense to me.

I believe that Walgreens is having the SAK clearance sale because I don't think that anyone knew that Walgreens even carried pocket knives...and that would tend to hurt sales. ;)

After getting SO MUCH out of Bladeforums, it's nice to be able to give back!

By the way, my original post was incorrect -- I did indeed purchase a Sportsman II, not a Huntsman II. Sorry about that!

By the way, Walgreens is having a Clearance Sale on their Victorinox Classic SDs and Sportsman IIs, so if you've gone to a Walgreens to see if they have any in-stock, but they were out, they won't be getting any more in their inventory. I've told a couple of friends about this sale and I bet that they're checking the Walgreen stores around them.

If no one else, besides savvy BladeForums members, knows that Walgreens has pocket knives, let alone SAKs, you might be able to find a few still around! Look in the Automotive section of the store, generally aisle 5D. ;)

This is a one-time steal, err, deal!

I've been doing a little research and what I've been calling the Sportsman II is an "Ecoline" model. It has the roughened red scales. I haven't decided if I prefer the smooth or rough scales, but the rough ones seem to provide a more secure grip.

GeoThorn,

You're correct - the Sportsman II available at Walgreens does have rough scales. I've heard (but can't verify) that Walgreens and apparently other retailers are able to market rough-scaled Vics at a low price because Victorinox charges less for them - it seems the rough scales are cheaper to manufacture than the standard smooth scale.

That seems logical to me, but again, I can't confirm.

The matte red scales on the Ecoline are nylon rather than the cellidor used on most Vics. If you look at any of the European sites selling Vics, you will find the Ecoline retails for less money. Occasionally they show up in the US.

Joe :)

Thanks for the info, Joe.

I believe the distinctive red scales were originally designed for high visibility if your SAK is dropped in mud or snow. Personally, I've grown fond of the rough scales - I think my grip is more secure.

I just checked my local Walgreens and got three of them for 5.19 each, I have about 3 more stores I am going to check

Went to 7 Walgreen stores yesterday and managed to find 5 SAKS. Thanks for the heads up!

If you're running out of Walgreens locations that you know about, you could check-out Walgreens' web site. On their "front page" they have a store locator where you imput a Zip code, and the next web page lists all of the Walgreens within five miles of that Zip, along with a handy-dandy map, the hours of the stores, etc.

P.S. So far I've bought 14 Sportsman IIs and 4 Classic SDs. I wouldn't have purchased so many Classic SDs, however, I've found a couple of Walgreens stores selling the translucent "sapphire" and 'ruby' versions.

Yes, the Classic SDs are the smallest SAKs that I know of. They're 2 1/4" | 58mm in length. I don't think that you'll be able to find a Classic SD anywhere for $6.59, much like you'll likely never find any more Sportsman IIs for $5.19, once this Walgreens clearance sale is over. Walgreens only carries two pocket knives, and those are the Classic SD and the Sportsman II. So, when you've found your Sportsman IIs, you may have noticed the Classic SDs on a display rack above them.

I have two 2 1/4" | 58mm SAKs on my car's keyring, one is a Classic SD with translucent "sapphire" scales, and the other is a Signature II Lite in translucent 'ruby.' They're light enough so that I'm not (too) worried about damaging my car's starter with too-heavy of a keyring.

A couple of Wal*Marts near me have started carrying the Victorinox Sportsman. Last night, I asked an associate if I could check-out one of them. I wanted to see if the Wal*Mart Sportsmans have the red plastic/cellidor scales, or the matte red nylon scales of the Walgreens' Sportsman IIs that I'd bought. Sure enough, the Wal*Mart Sportsman's have the red plastic/cellidor scales. Is the only difference between a Victorinox Sportsman and a Sportsman II the scale materials? It seems so.

Another big difference is that the Wal*Mart Sportsmans are priced at $14.73...versus the $5.19 sale price of the Walgreens' Sportsman IIs I bought....

Thanks, again, for a great sale tip, MG_Saldivar!
