Took another stroll same in the same area as last week but a more interesting route on the west end and thru the heart of this preserve called Waterfall Glen skirting Argonne National Lab-East.

On thru the pines, up a hill to a bluff and accross towards the high side of the creek then descended down.

My hiking stick came in very handy here. This trail has a steep dropoff just a few feet from the path. I was sliding on the leaves but the stick kept me from sliding off trail and down. I think everyone that ventures out needs a wooden staff or a single adjustable walking stick or a pair of them.
I would plant my stick in the soil ahead then plant my foot against it so it wouldn't slide. Very handy to have these!

This was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's and is still standing. I believe this is the actual camp area for the restoration/erosion control crew that worked here in the 30's. This was a nice way to end a hard day of labor for the crew that worked in this area. I believe there was a shelter or bunk building here and this was part of it. No doubt this was the only heat available in cooler weather. There are some other remnants of structures in the immediate area but they are mostly dismantled and are at ground level now.
Someone had left me some hot coals so i stoked it and warmed up a while.

WOW! Those are some great pictures! Looks like a fantastic time out and about. That creek is beautiful and I really like that fire place. I know you enjoyed sitting out by the fire under the full moon...I know I sure did and I was nowhere as lovely as that.

I like my hiking stick all year long but it really comes in handy more so in the Autumn. The fallen leaves can make for a treacherous path in more ways than one.

Nice pics! That burl reminds me of the big burl Dick Proenneke cut off a tree, then made into a table top and a serving bowl.

Those are some awesome pics! Thanks for sharing them!

I like the fireplace, it looks really neat.

 Looking forward to getting back to Devils Lake with you Bro! I plan on getting some new gear this week. Hope the weather holds.

Talk to you soon,

Wow - excellent shots and what a day. Very cool fungi - perfect shape from the bottom. That fireplace looks like a great place to relax too!

Welcome Brother. Glad you signed up here

Porkie - did you see any deer? There used to be a lot of white deer in the area around the lab, not sure if they were albino, or just some special variant that the gov. brought in.

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing.

Oooooooh.... the handles I could make with that little minx...

Thanks for the article on the deer. Pretty cool stuff, I remember seeing them all the time in that area when I was a kid.
