I took a walk in the expansive preserve around Argonne Lab late in the day.
Was a nice walk just after some light rain.

Site info:
Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve – with its glacier-formed ridges, ravines and potholes -- may be the most astonishing parcel of open space in DuPage County, if not northern Illinois. The preserve is exceptional, because it contains features not found anywhere else in the county: The largest contiguous woodland block – over 700 acres -- and a dolomite prairie, with rock very close to the surface and shallow soil, home to rare plants for the region.

Waterfall Glen’s many habitats -- prairies, savannas, oak-maple woodlands and planted pine groves – and distinctive features make it a haven for a wide variety of plants and animals. Surveys by District ecologists have recorded more than 600 native plant species at the preserve, which includes 75 per cent of all the plants known to grow naturally in DuPage County. In addition, countless fish, amphibian, reptilian, and mammalian species can be found in the preserve, as well as more than 160 avian species, some year-round and some migrating.

Entering on a service road heading towards the Desplaines River Valley which was left by the Wisconsin Glacier. This road descended gradually down this bluff at first then steeply down to the valley floor. My lens fogged up at the bottom so I put it away until later.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing.

In regards to this plant, check with Normark  - he's our resident expert!!!!

Actually, it's Arisaema triphyllum (Jack-in-the Pulpit).

Check out Eric's thread here. :D You'll have to scroll down a bit.

All kidding aside, though, once again evidence to be absolutely sure of identification before trying any wild plant as a food or medicine. (And yes, I have done the same thing, although my hasty, misidentification was with Canada Moonseed (Menispermum canadensis) many years ago. Almost chowed down on this tasty 'Wild Grape' :o ) I mention this so Eric knows I'm not picking on him. :D

Doc, That's it! Thanks for the info. It certainly looks spicey eh?

I only found one in the immediate area. I wonder if that's normal for this plant?

Don't know your area, but around here, they grow here and there, usually in shaded woods. Sometimes, almost in clumps, other times, not.

Porcupine--

Been to Waterfall Glen many many times with the boys and Mrs. Watchful. It's a great place that has many neat little surprises tucked away. I'll look for you next time we're there!

You'll be easy for me to spot: you'll be the guy enjoying every square inch of the place.

Jack in the Pulpit is very common hereabouts. And yeah, when ripe, it turns angry red. Your photos are textbook examples of the variety local to the Western suburbs.

Glad to see you endorsing this place. Somewhere, hereabouts, I have some photos of my adventures there.

It is native to the Chicago area and is all over the Forest Preserves.

I tried to PM you with my email but it did not go through. I only have the basic account. Here is my email if you want to contact me:
