Have you ever been on a walkabout?I went on one of sorts for two months when I was 17 in the summer of 1971.I hitch-hiked and hopped freight trains through 45 states and most of Canada ending up in Alaska and getting home a week late for the start of school. The experience changed the course of my life.
I have talked to my 15 year old grandson about going on a a solo wilderness tip next summer. He is excited. Now if I can talk my wife and his mother into letting him go.
I have been the sole male influence in his life.We took his mother in when she was a pregnant teenager and they lived with us for ten years. He is a great kid.He is an expert on John Wayne movies and collects knives and guns.He works for me and is learning to restore fossils and carve. He wants to be a mechanical engineer and I am sure he will be good at it.

I think it would be a wonderful trip for the two of you. Things may have changed quite a bit since you went. Hope you get to do it.

Everyone who can should go on a walkabout at least once. When I get everything set, I plan to walk from Florida to Canada. Only the last few generations of my family have been in the US. Before that, we were all Paddies that moved to Canada. I plan to walk there and visit all the relatives I can. From what they tell me, I could walk from one end of Canada to the other without ever having to use a hotel. (We've spread a little bit :D ) After that, mabye I'll go to Ireland and find some of my remaining relatives.
