Here are 4 additions to my collection made in the first quarter this year. It is only recently that I have been able to see these in the flesh and photograph them, as they are stored with a relative in the UK. So on a recent visit I took some quick photos using a board by a window, with a piece of white card to fill the shadow.
Lonnie Hansen: Modified Dragon Slayer
This came straight from Lonnie Hansen, I placed the order after seeing an example of this piece in Knives 2002. It is a really sweet piece, the blade has straight, unclipped profile, combined with the extended lower arm of the quillion style asymmetrical guard, it has a real fighter feel to it. A light and quick piece with excellent finish. The hamon and blade finish is fantastic. The spacers in that beautiful handle are undetectable with your fingers. I am delighted with the piece, and Lonnie was extemely easy and precise to work with. The sheath is all Lonnies work as well.
Blade Length: 8"
OAL: 13"
Handle: Presentation Desert Ironwood
Steel: 1086M with clay tempered Hamom
Fittings: Nickel Silver
Jerome Anders (MS) : Coffin Handled Bowie
I had been watching Jeromes work for some time and saw this piece prior to his deserved attainment of Master Smith status. I really fell for the coffin handle, and wrapped butt plate, the classic blade shape, with the double contour top clip - it was exactly what I was looking for at the time. I was not dissappointed - its a beautiful piece with a real old west charm, a piece to rest silently on your hip until called upon. The blade is thick and strong, the wood rich and deep, the butt plate beautifully executed. A winner in my mind.
Blade Length: 9 1/2"
OAL: 14 3/4 "
Handle: Presentation Desert Ironwood
Steel: 5160 Hand rubbed
Fittings: Nickel Silver, escutcheon, butt plate.
John Fitch (MS): SW Stag Bowie
In the world of forged bowies big John Fitch needs no introduction, his style and finish are very distinctive. Therefore when I saw this piece I new instantly that it was a classic Fitch and a must have addition to my collection of forged bowies. The blade has that unmistakable southwestern profile, a touch of belly, with a slight upsweep to the spine, before it falls upon a devillishly sharp top clip. As crisp and clean as anything I have seen this blade is a masterpiece of understated menace. John has then added a simple contoured symmetrical guard that meets perfectly a beautifully textured morticed stag handle, talk about grip! A classic in all respects and a welcome addtion to my collection.
Blade Length: 9 "
OAL: 13 1/2"
Handle: Stag
Steel: 1084
Fittings: Nickel Silver
Jim Walker (MS) - Massive Mammoth Bowie
A well established master, the highly respected Jim Walker was another target for the "Classic" section of my collection. This piece fits the bill perfectly. A photograph cannot convey the magnitude of this piece. From the incredibly smooth, richly coloured mammoth ivory handle, through the crisp, clean collar and guard, to that broad, thick, and discreetly bellied blade, this is all knife - a massive bowie with superb balance and exquisite feel. A timeless piece that is testimony to the work of the ABS makers.
Blade Length: 10"
OAL: 15 1/2"
Handle: Mammoth Ivory
Steel: 5160
Fittings: Nickel Silver
What a fantatsic trip back to the UK that was
