If I have no knife on me I feel naked. How much blade makes you feel comfortable if you feel the same way.
I need at least 3 inches...my current EDC is a (sorry) benchmade 530.At 3.25inches I feel fine and it works great for envelopes, boxes etc.

When I venture into more interesting areas a bigger blade is nice.3.5 or bigger. My old enduras filled this role well.

What do you use?

I'm okay with something like a Dragonfly, but I prefer something a little bigger in case of cougar attack or alien invasion. Seriously, its that "what if" factor that keeps me from carrying only a teeny blade.

Thank you.I prefer big blades myself.

Of course in the case of alien invasion I prefer the ability to call in tactical nuke strikes. But that is just me.

Odd as it sounds...95% of the time...I carry a esee izula knife, but most of my money goes into spyderco knives. Its just so easy to throw into my pocket, the other times...its a spyderco ulize. A few times ive carried my zt 200.

It makes sense..you have some reach.I have a luftwaffe gravity knife I carry when it's scary. It is flat ground and I love the steel.
I was horrified to learn it is worth 800 dollars plus...which makes it for me unreplaceable. When I get my police 3 I will post pics of it for the sake of comparison.

It is my favorite blade by far when the going is sketchy.

I carry ~3 in +, with my typical being a Military, Southard, Navaja, etc.

I recently got a Ti Delica (technically not 3in but a good 2.95" ha) and it has gotten a lot of pocket time.

When it comes to the variety of things that leave the house with me every day, I am less likely to forget a pocket knife over my wallet, phone, keys, etc.

I only go sub 3" if I have to (going to Chicago for instance) or when I run which a SE H1 Dragonfly is great for that. I do always have my Dog Tag around my neck, but have only used it once or twice. I see myself using it in a situation where I have my Military or something really big on me and not wanting to pull that out, but I only carry knives at work around 3.5" or less.

My minimum dressing requirements are: 3-4 inch Spydie + Alox SAK.

I can get by with just the SAK in an emergency, but it makes me feel a little bit empty inside :)

This discussion should be put in General.

But my comfort zone for a daily carry is 3.5"-4" which is max legal limit in my area. Carrying something bigger pushes me out of that zone and that's what this thread is about, right?

(OFF-TOPIC: Sorry, just staring at LeathermanGX's current "Feelin' the 4th" sig :D -- all that's missing is the proper mood music.)

It wasn't too long ago for me that I didn't even carry a single MT. Now I feel semi-nekkid if I don't have at LEAST that (prefer to also carry a dedicated blade as well, even if it's just a 2.5-inch or shorter).

I live in NC in the mountains. Here gravity knives and switchblades are perfectly legal for open carry.Of course schools and courthouses are a no no.

I forgot I had my endura in my pocket at a service call in a police station.I used it to open a part which instantly caused the officers nearby to whip out their knives and we all had a great time comparing blades.

It all depends on where you live.Obviously some jurisdictions are far more restrictive.Your appearance and demeanor impact it too.Being a 53 year old man helps.Fair or not I can do lots of things that would ruin a younger man's day!

I just got back home from several wks "up north" with a SAK. The knife worked well when I needed it, and I cannot fault it. I do believe that I would prefer it as a second knife...at home in my watch pocket. I used the scissors, nail file, and the blade several times. I did miss carrying a larger knife, however, usually in the length of about 3 1/4" - 3 1/2" blade or so. My faves are the Zaan, Southard AVO, or perhaps the Slysz Bowie that I just received today.
