I need to make a storage / display unit, but need some input, plans, and ideas. Tips on things to avoid would help as well. I used search but everything that turned up had broken pics. Personally I like this type the best (see below). It looks as though there are long magnets covered with a imitation wood looking vinyl holding the knives which I like better than trying to rest them lying down. If you something you would like to share please post it.

Friend, buy or build that display cabinet. But, if you leave the house over-night, buy an alarm system and a German Shepherd.

Will a blind Boxer and a 16 yr old Lhasa apso with a bad hip work? Probably not, my boxer thinks I'm the refrigerator half the time.

Agreed.

I have been burglarized and it was not pretty. The worst thing is the feeling that you are no longer safe in your own home. Property loss takes a back seat to all feelings you will go through.

If you must display, put only a few knives out and keep the others secure in a good gun safe. Every month or so, rotate what is out for everone to see. You will enjoy your collection more and sleep better at night.

Thanks guys, I do already have an alarm, and the display case will be in the basement where it is mostly for my own benefit of viewing.

Whatever you do, make sure it's lockable and something that a thief couldn't just pick up and walk off with!

Pegboard might work. You can get about an 8' x 4' long sheet and all the mounting hardware at Lowes(I think) and you can put a lot of knives and other things on it if you can find enough pegs. It offers no security so I have mine in a locked room with a steel security door.

I don't see what the point of having this shit is if you guys leave it locked up where nobody can see it. I have home insurance, and everything but my family is replaceable.

I can not imagine anything short of a sword with a suit or armor looking good on a wall no matter the system. And I do not collect swords or armor.
Still one day I will have to find a replacement for the cheap plastic storage bins that I keep in a closet for my knives: they start falling apart and knives are overspilling on the floor... Something like a big wooden tool chest would be ideal: but they are pretty expensive, not easy to get and I would certainly need more than one. Will probably have to make them myself. That will be quite a project!

Hey poez, check harbor freight for that wooden toolbox. They're pretty nice and I think they're like $80 on sale

I don't see the point in having this stuff and making it easy for someone else to walk away with it. Yes, it is replaceable but some people it has taken them years to collect what they have. I sure as hell wouldn't like to replace thousands of dollars worth of knives. It isn't everybody's dream to display/advertise their stuff. Not a tough concept to grasp really.

I get your point, I usually make an extra effort to remain objective to other peoples viewpoints, I was having a bad day at work, sorry. Other thing is my knives aren't as valuable as, or custom as a lot of yours, so much more easily replaced than a custom collection.

Sorry for dragging this back up, but I finally got my display cabinet done. Materials were under $200, as opposed to $500 for a lesser quality deal from Ikea.
