Wall mounting of blades

I have several large collectables that I would like to hang on a wall and I'm asking for your aesthetic thoughts. Is there a proper way to hang blades as there is with say, horseshoes? Does it matter tip up, tip down?
If there is no meaning to the orientation of the blade, is there an orientation that you personnally prefer? Also, how should a sheath be hung/displayed? Blade sheathed? Seperate?

Unleash the interior decorator in you! Thanks.

There was a thread just recently where somebodies Mom had him some wooden display cases for his knives and also one of his guns, it looked great. There are several companies that sell similar wooden display cases that come in various sizes and aren't too expensive.
As far as postioning the knife, I prefer edge down with the kniffe on a diagonal. I wouldn't show or keep a knife in a sheath, but you could put the sheath along side or behind the sheath.

I've also been wanting to display several knives I haveon the wall. I've been thinking about how to hang them. What kind of hanger. I want to orient them angled tip down and stack one above the other perhaps with the sheaf next to it. I'm stumped on what to use to hang them that would look good. Anyone found or made anything that would work?

jsciii: here in Kuwait the interior walls of homes are cinder block plastered over; no framing, paneling, or drywall. The only choices I have are hangers nailed into the plaster or adhered to it. The available hangers are pretty unsightly. One solution a friend used was to put wire tie around it at the guard and hang it from that. I'm not wild about the looks since you're usually limited to black or white ties and they're pretty ugly too.
I know this isn't much help because I'm still looking for solutions too but I thought it might help you to know what I've seen tried.

If you don't mind drilling holes in your wall, why not mount your knives with 1/4" wooden dowels held in place with a little epoxy? If your knife has a guard (like a bowie) 2 dowels would hold your knife vertically. Put 1 dowel for the blade to rest on & 1 for the handle to hold it horizontally. Depending on the knife, you could use 2 or 3 dowels to hold it in position at any angle! Just be wary of earthquakes! The display cases mounted on the wall like picture frames would be more stable & easier to dust.
The sheath could be mounted on the wall in the same fashion. I personally would not mount the knife in the sheath as moisture held by sheath may cause knife to rust and besides, the knife is what your're displaying. Good luck with your project!

One common mistake of beginners is to mount a single knife or two on the wall. This creates a feeling of lonliness and existential angst. A better approach is to mount at least 50, projecting a feeling of community. Here is an example of a notorious collecter (not me) displaying his decor.

Spouses should be more understanding of the expense when you explain it in interior decorating terms. That's my theory anyway.

Howard, thank you for reaching into your creative id and sharing with us. You're dead-on about the sense of community. Displaying the knives in the sheaths contributes to the "oneness". All I can say is you got feng shui out the ass. I can also see that you are big on plaids for the fall season.

MOST EXCELLENT WALL DISPLAY!!!!

Thanks Raven, I too considered the hanger and wire (but not a wire tie) but didn't think I'd like the way it looked.

I thought about the dowel idea too and currently it's the best one I have. My thoughts on it were to get a 3/4 inch dowel and cut a groove in it for the blade and a notch for the handle. Felt it might sit better that way (no earthquakes but plenty of hurricanes). Figured I'd paint the dowel or perhaps stain them. Haven't considered much about the sheaths but if they looked good I'd mount them next to knife somewhere. A friend suggested using magnets. Not sure about that one.

I notice a knife theme in the picture. I'm thinking along the same lines with big knives and folders. I realize that cases are more suited but has anyone done a wall display with folders?

One way is to use space in a bookcase or entertainment center. If you remove books from the top couple shelves of a bookcase you can mount knives on the back wall of the structure. My bookcases have removable shelves which allows more space and better viewing. A small portrait light can highlight the display which otherwise might be shady. What I did in the past was to have a mirror on the back of the display area and replace a wood shelf with a glass shelf. I took my fixed blade knives out of their sheaths and slid them point downwards behind the glass shelf. Another way would be to stick the blade tips into a lower shelf and display the knives sort of "in action".
