Wallet-based survival kit - ever tried it?

Lately I've been thinking about small survival kits that could easily be carried around. I know most people go the altoids tin route, but I've been noticing more of the credit card tools popping up lately. That got me to thinking, what if you designed a whole EDC survival kit inside a wallet?

The tools I've seen include Iain Sinclair knives & lights, DMT sharpeners, Swiss tool credit tard multitools (some of which feature magnesium fire strikers) and various similar tools from other brands. Those alone give you blade, blade care, light, fire, and a few tools like tweezers and toothpicks in just 4 credit cards. Depending on the wallet, you could easily slip a few bandaids and pills (including iodine tablets for water) inside for a mini FAK. You could also fit a bit of rolled up fishing line & hook, some matches, and you could even do it inside a pocket-chain wallet and replace the chain with a paracord lanyard.

Or, maybe this is just a silly idea. :p

But really, what are your thoughts? I'm probably not thinking of some stuff that would work great...

Old time camper Horace Kephart did. He talks about it on page 176 of his book called camping and woodcraft.
I have never made one. I like small pouch and this is what it looks like and what I carry in it.

Bryan....I like that Final Option Knife ! As for this post....the idea seems good but I think an Altoids tin would fit the bill a little better. Just my .02

I bought a Spyder card years back that I always have in my wallet. Wish they still made them. All the threads I've been reading about small kits lately has me thinking about getting a maxpedition pocket organizer. Even the micro could hold a lot of useful stuff.

They definitely have more space. My thinking, though, is organization. Wallets can have a lot of little pockets/compartments, and kits tend to have a lot of little things. :)

Bryan, I've seen your kit picture before, and I gotta say, taking the SAK pliers out is a brilliant idea. I've now stolen two screwdrivers, a bottle opener, and the pliers out of mine and stuck them on a keychain.

Hi all,
coaldigger, thanks. Those little knives can really be a life saver. since a knife even a small one is better than not having one lol.

Grease, the little tools from the SAK are pretty handy for a small kit. I have tried to fit all the kit I have into a wallet but it just works out better for a small pouch that I can wear on my belt.

Thanks for the link Tixx. Some good ideas in there. There are a bunch of other videos about a wallet type kit.
I will be doing some more watching of them.

Let us know if and what you come up with Grease.

I have seen the pic of your kit before, maybe at EDCF. I definitely second Grease's thoughts on those SAK pliers. That is definitely what caught my attention. :)

Are baby bottle bags similar to MRE hot beverage bags? Never had them in my grubby hands before.

I an not sure on the MRE bags . What I like about the baby bottle bags is that they stand up when filled and they sure seem to be pretty tough also.
Yea the pliers are really a great piece of gear to have and use. For grabbing onto a needle when sewing is so much better than
fingers lol.

I'll have to pic some up and give them a try. Can they handle hot water or milk I guess in this case? :)

I have never put hot water in one yet so I do not know. Good question though.

i will have to try it and see lol.

I keep a small flattened roll of duct tape (just fold over the duct tape to the size of a credit card) and a fresnel lens in my wallet.

I keep a couple of band Aids,a large diaper safety pin and a couple of thin laces that came off a pair of snowboarding boots. They take up hardly any space at all and come in handy occasionally.
