Wallet Interiors?

My cobra skin wallet has just about had it. It's been a trustworthy edc companion for about 5 years.

I have enough projects on my plate for the next 10 years, but let's pretend I found the time to make a wallet. :)

I will need to hand stitch this bad boy. I'm cool with most aspects of making the wallet, but the interior is tricky.

Those of you that make wallets, do you make your own interiors? If not, where do you get yours?

I'm just looking for something simple like my old one.

There are two bill pockets which I like because I can separate the $20's from the smaller bills.

One option is to buy another wallet, break it down and replace the exterior panel with shark.

Any and all advice is welcome.

As a full time leather guy I never have the need to separate the $20's from the $1's, never see anything but the $1's. Well, there is the occasional $5, so I understand now. Great to see you back into projects and I'm sure these guys will have the best answer for you. Stay healthy and keep up the good work!

Rick! Haha, yeah I hear ya the $20's section is usually a little light. :)

Thanks for the well wishes too.

I've been poking around and I'm not seeing anything I like. May just have to buckle down and learn how to make them. Just don't have the time for that right now. On the other hand I started making sheaths because I needed them, and I'm gonna need the wallet so... ;)

Strig thats how and why made my first pair of leggings.

Heck yeah. Necessity is the mother of wallet making, or something like that.

I have a piece of titanium tubing coming (thanks Mecha!) for making a cane. That's probably at or near the very top on my list of must do's. Should have made one a year and a half ago, but better late than never. :)

What sort of handle for the cane ?
Stacked leather ?

I haven't decided. I need to look at the tubing and see if I need to get some length from the handle. I believe the tube is 3' so it's probably enough on its own. I'd like to go with natural g10 or some color of micarta if I can find a block of it. Cf would be cool too, but a block big enough would probably be pretty expensive. Need to figure out the foot too, as well as how I'll anodize it (or not).

I make and sell a fairly popular 'slim' bifold, that is really easy to make. Just remember to leave your interior main panel about 3/8" shorter than the exterior to prevent bunching. You can sew the card pockets onto another piece if you want a third pocket on each side for miscellaneous, and add a cloth lining to the main pocket if you want a divider - the latter will give you that separation while keeping it thin. The cloth will wear out a long time before the leather will.

That is cool Eagle! I quit wallets some time ago but that is cool. Strig I vote for an antler handle with some ironwood spacers.

Back to the original subject of this thread.

Anthony, google Chaylor-Fenneli Australia PTY LTD. They make some fine interiors for many styles of wallets, and I believe Springfield leather carries the line.

I have tried the Chaylor-Fenneli interiors with good results, but a lot of them use cardboard which I did not like. Springfield Leather now offers their own line of interiors that are of good quality and a little bit better on price. I use a lot of the Roper interiors which are really popular in my neck of the woods. Pardon the glue on this example, 'the cobblers shoes' scenario this was my test mule wallet.

Omega, heck the condition of your wallet is just about where I consider my wallets "broken in". ;) It drives my family nuts. I use them until they literally fall apart. I think I've had less than a half dozen in my lifetime. There are plenty of projects that I jump into, just because I can. Even though it would be way cheaper to just buy it.

But a wallet is not one I've done yet. Well, except one.....when I was a kid, I started to make my Dad a Tandy kit wallet. Got it all tooled, half stitched, and gave it to him partially finished for Father's Day....at least five or six times. :) Dad has long since passed, but I still have that half stitched wallet stored away. Brings a smile to my face every time I see it.

One of these days I'll have to try to make myself one. I like the simple styles shown above. I have however made some minimalist wallets. Simple card holder with money clip on outside. But the clips I've used (pretty much every one Tandy sells), are all a bit too bulky to wear in back pocket. So my next attempt will be a simple card slip with a shorter pocket for folded cash (no clips).

Please let us know what you end up making. I love seeing your work.

This was the first thing I ever made that required any kind of leather work or just plain hand stitching in general (yes I know very crude or for you guys just plain sucks lol) but I tried and have have it for 2 years now

Zack, that doesn't suck! If it works for you then its plenty good for anyone. :D

Speaking of canes, yes, I've been looking in that direction, Anthony, keep me updated. I want something both helpful and lethal. ;) The small of my back keeps abandoning me.....

Haha comparing to something you guys would make it does but no worries it suit me just great

Yeah, so what is the ideal weight for interiors?

I would like to hear about firmness as well.

I have 1-2oz pig (very soft)

Same in emu, also soft

4oz W&C shoulder, very firm

Can't remember what else in lightweight.
Are any of the above suitable? I think the W&C might work. I can thin it on the 4" belt sander too.

Wish I had armed myself with info before stopping at HH today. May be a slight chance I could stop by again tomorrow.

Dwayne, Mecha shipped that tube today. It's 6" longer than he remembered too, so I think the handle choice will be wide open. I'll keep you informed. No chance on stag. I like stag, but the ti will probably be anodized red or something. Probably wouldn't go well together. High tech all the way. ;)

I can't speak for the others but I use a hard rolled 4 oz which is more like 3.5oz for the bi-fold. It's veg tan W&C that's been holstered/plated. I don't mess with linings because I don't think they stand up to the test of time, a split pig skin would be a popular choice and if you wanted to get fancy you could do a rolled edge with it. I'd be more apt to do a 'rough out' wallet for a smooth bill pocket if that's what you were after. Give you a good billboard for a shark overlay or something. The roper wallets are doubled up so more like 7 oz total skived to 4/5 in the middle to cut down on bulk at the fold.
