Hi All:

Just wondering if I am the only person fool enough to walk around with survival gear in his wallet.

I figure I have three kits the bug out bag in my truck, the mini kit that sometimes is in my coat and my wallet. Out of the three my wallet is with me the most so I put stuff in it ( hey I figure better to have it than not )

I tried to think of what I would need most so I figured

tools
fire
shelter

Well my gerber multitool kind of covers tools in a pinch ( yes it is not in my wallet but I usually carry it

On to the wallet kit

0000 steel wool for tinder
nylon waxed line for shelter
boy scout metal match
nylon thread
the itty bitty SAK ( pen blade, file, tweesers, scissors )

I figure that out in the cold these could at least get me a lean to a fire and a way to skin a rabbit if I can catch one with a snare.

Just a thought

I'm a little curious, so you spend a lot of time in the woods, or are you mostly in town? I tend to gear myself toward the environment I will be in. There is, of course, always the unforseen but I gear my load-out based on whether I am going into an urban area, or out in the woods. It's cool though that you can get all that into your wallet. Mine is pretty much full of everything but money.

Does anybody carry a quarter in case they need to make a phone call and have no cell available (dead battery. etc.)?

I live in rural northern Maine about 15 miles from Canada. Trees and more trees I love it.

I dont carry a quarter but I do have a phone card

Sometimes there's cash in there too.

The important stuff is in my pockets.

String (from inside paracord)
bandaids
vaseline soaked cotton ball in small ziplock
awl needle, carried beside credit card

Other complementary items are also regularly carried on keychain and in pocket.

Very nice Plainsman! All very flat I notice with exception of the knife.

My own is much less complete. I carry a Spyder Card, a spare key to my car, and a ferrocium rod at this point.

xtra vehicle key...cut down to the minimum..of course.

most useful for many purposes...a single edge razor blade.

a 'hidden' bill or two don't hurt either.

As a teen I carried what I called my "Be Prepared Kit". It was a general purpose field and urban utility kit. I made it from a wallet that zipped shut all around the edge. While the contents changed over time common contents were:

Small lighter
matches (primarily as incendiary/explosive stock)
Pull-string firecracker "burglar traps"
Scout knife with side panels removed
miniature adjustable crescent wrench, 1/2" maximum opening
4" segment broken from 6" mill bastard file
(this had handle wrap out of 30# test polyfiliment nylon line)
similarly wrapped broken piece of fine-toothed hacksaw blade
wire saw
fish hooks
forger's kit (miniature mechanical pencil with 4 colors of lead, miniature ballpoint pen with 4 colors of ink)
cut down miniature note pad
change for phone
tin of aspirin
condom

Sometimes I carried a small packet of thermite with magnesium/potasium nitrate igniter charge. This would ignite or burn almost anything.

In case you couldn't tell, my favorite TV shows were "I Spy" and "The Man From Uncle". The heros were always having to get in or out of places they weren't supposed to be.

Sheesh! I didn't realize there was anybody besides me out here old enough to remember those shows! Great kit... Remember T.H.E Cat?

Thomas Hewitt Edward Cat. My favorite Loggia show. I used to dress up in the black pants, black turtle neck, etc. I couldn't get the knife to stay behind my neck. (did cut the heck out of myself once tryin thought..)

That show was it, along with Burke's Law.

Jeff, remember the "I Spy" episode where the two main characters were visiting the place where Scotty? grew up in Idaho I believe. Some nogoodniks followed them there in an attempt to do them in. They were able to fight back with only a .22 rifle and some kitchen cxleaning products.

Makes you look at your home in a different way.

I thought that episode was where Kelly grew up. Anyway it was a pump-action .22 that would only take "shorts" and "longs", but no "long rifle" ammo. I think it was one of the episodes that Culp wrote.

One of my favorites was one time when they were stuck in a locked room and only had boxes of frozen codfish and some cleaning supplies to work with. I remember Scotty complaining, "I finally get a situation where I need to make a codfish bomb and I can't get the darned codfish out of the box." As I recall they used explosive vapors from mixing dry ice with ammonia or alcohol.

Cool idea. Wish I'd thought of it. Grin.

I'm curious, did the wire saw function well, or just barely? What kind was it?

Those were the days, dude.

The wire saw didn't see a lot of use. It was a fairly cheap deal with sort of twisted sheet metal with teeth that was twisted along with cable fibers. I only recal using it to cut green branches off of trees. It worked ok for that.

The lighter, pocket knife, and file saw the most use.

Those were the days...Occasionally I find myself humming the jazz theme from T.H.E. Cat.

Hello, longtime lurker with first post, My everyday kit is not a wallet but a small cigarette case, an oldie in brown plastic. Inside is a small Old Timer trapper model knife,a shaved down candle, a mini maglite (1AAA), a mini butane lighter that's the same size as the maglite, an Suntoo wristcompass, oneedged razor blade, about 3' snare wire, enough nylon lace for a lanyard, alcohol swab and a few bandaids, spare AAA battery,a cut down Eze lap diamond sharpener, (thin and flat), and a little baggie with a couple of vaseline soaked cottonballs. On the outside about 5' each of electrical tape and, half width strip of duct tape, and a velcro watchband to hold the case securely together and for the compass. So far the mini mag has been usefull in a power failure, and the tape repaired a splintered glass tent pole. Like others here I usually have a multitool and a small folder near at hand but like to feel the weight of this little package in the jacket pocket. It is 3.5" by 4" by .75" and carries well, though a little heavy. I have a bigger tin kit ala John Wiseman for the great outdoors and think shud try to tune this one to a more urban mode.. A shortcoming is just the one fire source and it is also a bit fussy when the lights go out, but then, it is there when the lights go out.
Hope this all turns out, as I am struggling though this without my daughter's guidance.. cheers to all
Chris

Hi Chris, welcome aboard!
Sounds like a good kit. If you tune your wallet kit more toward outdoors trips you might consider alternative fire starters: small ferrocerium rod and waterproof (or -proofed) matches. Also, condom, balloon or plastic bag might serve as improvised water container (I prefer bags for leak protection). Although I also use the AAA Maglite, the photon lihts give longer battery life and less weight, however less light. I put a Suunto wrist compass into my kit too and find it probably the best for the weight and size.
Just my thoughts,

HM

Thanks for the welcome, first post looks a little long as I read it now..
I do have a bigger outdoors type kit in fannypak that goes under car seat when travelling and with me when hiking, with mag block and sparking rod, water, first aid, etc, will look up ferrocium on search as I know it is mentioned often as a must have..
With the little wallet kit it is usually with me in urban settings, ie hotel one time with power out..trying to think what could be better suited for city, than say the wire.. Haven't seen photons locally but just picked up a blue ASP light at a show, and too enamored of it to let that sit in kit.cool thingy...speaking of ASP it says free battery and crystal for life, but by time I buy US$ with my poor Canadian money and endure the mercies of two postal services.. . anyone know if batteries a type easily avail. and can I replace myself?
thx for comments cheers..

Well since I don't carry a wallet, I carry a silver cig box which is about the same size as a wallet where I keep the following items. Credit card, phone card and I.D. a compass. Its the size of a dime and its flat , its probably not the best compass in the world but I got it for its size. spyder card. safety pin to comes in handy when you need to remove splinters or bind things together. Condoms plain no lube. If your stuck in the dessert and you manage to collect water these little things can stretch out and hold up to one liter of water! Fishing line go for the 5-10 lb its much more useful than the 30 to 60 and they take up less space. You be amaze how many feet you can fit in the size of a penny. One small fishing hook put a piece of cork on the head and dip it in wax. "make sure to sharpen the hook with a file. You be amazed that the fishing hooks you buy at the store aren't that sharp. The wax will keep the hook from poking you and it can be use to add in starting a fire. one blister band aid. Not your regular band aid. A few water purification tablets. SAS uses them when they are on patrol in the jungle. Whats good enough for them is good enough for me.
Disposable antibotic cream. They come in little packs of inchin by 1/4 of an inch. Getting an infection is a bad thing in the wild. Throw in a few glucose pills and asprin well your at it. the sugar will keep you going and keep you calm and give you the energy you need to go on. Asprin well just in case you get a fever etc.. might need it just to keep you going. Metal wire to cut down small tree limbs to make shelter. And some sort of fire starter. Or waterproof matches. If you have room I would highly recommend taking a one of those solar blankets and cutting it up so you when you fold it up its only the size of a dollar bill and 3 bill thick or so. The reason I think you need the solar blanket is that if yoru stuck out in the cold you be able to survive a little longer if you prevent heat lost a lot of which comes from your head. You can use that strip to make a hat for yourself albeit that it wouldn't be perfect. Every little bit helps or shove them down your feet to keep your feet from getting frost bite. As you can see this list seems huge but the items take up very little space if you pack it in tightly. I'm sure you could pack. Even more stuff if you wanted to.
