I was in my local Walmart yesterday. I saw, what was new to me (only go there once every six months or so), a Buck endcap display featuring the chinese 373 model with a "rollback" price of $11.00. Wonder if that will be the new price at all the Walmart's, or just this one.

THey got in huge numbers of that model for XMass, they might be clearing out the leftovers.

Either way, that's a heck of a buy!

I bought two of the stockman you mentioned yesterday.I opened one on the spot and it was decent quality so I bought two.As fate would have it the other one was junk.uneven backsprings and one bolster had a very deep cut in it,Almost looked like it was cut with a saw.So it is on the way to buck to be replaced.I am really supprised this one got past qc.Ofcourse it is a made in china model so maybe thats why.I have never bought a us made buck that had anyflaws of any kind.guess it is just bad luck.Hopefully buck will make it right.

I'm sure they will, it happens. I actually did get a USA made 301, one with the blade engraved, "last Production Run, El Cajon, CA" that the blades were so poorly fitted that the Spey blade could not be opened unless you opened the Sheepsfoot blade first. Buck replaced it no problem.

I purchased one of the chinese Bucks when they first started bringing them in, and it is the best knife I've seen from China. I went to get one for my father-in-law at Christmas at Wal-mart. After digging through a display full of clampacks, I wasn't able to find one that didn't have some sort of easily noticed cosmetic flaw. They probably will function, but they aren't up to the standards of the first ones that were made in China. As TLC points out, this sort of thing can happen with any manufacturer with any mass produced item. I don't fault Buck for this (ended up getting a 303 for him) as they are held to a very serious bottom line.

I firmly believe there are more than one factory making knives for Wally World in China...I bought one of the three piece knife sets marked Remington and then bought another at a different Walmart...Totally different quailty.....I returned it and got another...just as bad..I returned that at the Walmart I bought the first set at and it was just as good as my first one....there were many differences...unpolished interior vs polished....emblems that where different finishes...etc...it seemed to me that there were a few different manufactuers that made these knives to a spec.....some where far better than others.....

These are interesting comments. U.S.A. made or not, they are supposed to have the same quality and it should be top notch. I will get with our Quality department and see if they can do an audit or something.
The only issue I was aware of, and they fixed it, was that the inlays on the early ones had a tendency to fall off. Not very often but often enough so we decided to have them riveted on instead.
I see every knife that comes in for warranty work and can say that we do not get an out of proportionate amount of China made knives back for repairs. I would love to see USA on every Buck knife so it is hard for me to remain objective on this but I sure can't fault the quality on the ones I have examined.
Now we need to find out what is going on to prompt comments like those in the previous posts. Those comments, by the way, are very much appreciated!

I bought one of those Remington sets also. Horrendous quality! It looked good in the package, but the hidden sides handles did not match the visible sides, blades were loose, etc. I have the distinct impression it was deliberately made to look good in the package and possibly to pass the importers QC process? Maybe the Chinese sub-contractor is putting one over on Buck and Walmart by putting out nice stuff for inspection on the front end, then switching to main production at a low end factory. Would not surprise me one bit.

I saw those knives on sale, but I just can't bring myself to buy a Buck made in China. I'd rather pay more for a USA cadet.

I did something back at XMASS that was kinda interesting ot me, I was at a Wal-mart that had about 30 of the Chinese 373's in clampacks. I went through them all and noticed that some were perfect and some had minor things like slight gaps between some liners and such.

Then I went over to another store the same night, a K's Merchandise that had about 25-30 USA 303's in clampacks. Went through them the same way, and to be honest as far as flaws and the percentage that had them, they were about dead even with the Chinese made knives.

I may have lucked out when I bought the USA 303 that I ended up with (it checked out fine and my father-in -law was happy). As I recall, the clampacked 373's generally had problems with liners/bolsters/wood on the side that faces inside and is less easily seen. Given the choice (and with Buck I am given one) I'll go with the USA 303, but I'm glad that Buck makes a product for the big box market and is concerned with QC. Better to compete and get a piece of the action than get shut out totally.

Just wanted to bring this one back up top to say, that at my local WallMart today, they had these U.S. Buck 110's in a collectors tin for the unreal price of $15.00!!! I grabbed five of them. Two to keep, and the rest for gifts. Just thought I'd pass it along.
Here it is.
