Just finished this one up, was hoping to finish about 6 more this week, but at least I got this one done.

Forged from 1095, Walnut handle (from Don Hanson), SS guard/pin/thong liner. Mortise tang contruction, tang runs to within 3/8" of butt, thong hole passes through tang (not that it matters a bunch, or anyone cares).

13-1/2" overall, 8-1/2" x 2" blade, differential heat treat, real nice hamon (although you cant see it in the pics). Handle still needs a few coats of finish-

Elegant and beautiful Matt. I can't wait to get mine.....

Exquisite! Although, perhaps I shouldn't say that about such a manly Bowie knife!

Seriously, that's almost precisely my favorite ...

Now I'm drooling again!! :grumpy: [Getting old sucks.]

Another example of why walnut is my favourite wood - just gorgeous. I'm with Keith - this one looks "right" in every respect. Good thing too, as it will be heading north. :) Great job Matt!

Thanks for showing ;)

I can see quite a nice Hamon on the blade.
I've been eyeing some of his walnut, might have to end up getting some, before long I'll have more handle material than I'll know what to do with.

Matt,

Not to say I didn't like your stuff before you moved down to AL and hooked up with that wizard down there, but your work has taken a great leap forward. It began with the Fikes-inspired pieces, but it has come back around to make the pieces you were doing before (like the one above) that much better.

Thanks all!

John, you are correct... and I was just thinking about that this week. I kinda got away from making the more traditional stuff. Was experimenting more with heat treat, cutting, forging techniques etc.

When I came back to making the more traditional stuff, im much happier with the end result than before. I recently saw a Bowie I made about 4 years ago, and while nothing was "wrong" I would definitely changed a few lines here and there. Its amazing what a few slight changes make in the overall style, flow and appeal of the knife.
