I just want to give a heads up to anyone that may purchase a Walter Brend Marauder.

I recently acquired one myself and it is flawless down to the smallest detail (I have handled others). It has his name engraved on the lockbar over travel stop, but no flag logo laser engraved on the blade or clip. I've done a complete disassembly and even the tiny bearings are kosher, however when I inquired to Walter about purchasing a logo'ed pocket clip we got to talking and I sent him a few pics. He said it's "not his work". But wouldn't elaborate.

Edit to remove inconclusive speculation and to add: Mine is identical down to every detail to another I've recently personally handled with Logo. It is just like the sterile ones posted below. Beats me what the deal is. It's perfect...

Original post is quoted below for reference.

What model Marauder was it? There was at least one legit sterile Brend
M2 Marauder I am aware of. Not sure if there were others. At the time / when built it seemed like a desirable option. Will have to explain it now going forward. LOL LOL This one has the M2 grind and stonewashed
Ti scales. (top right) Thats all I know for sure....... edited.

Scary.

Sadly, I believe the problem is rampant.

I would not be surprised, if many counterfeit knives, clothes and what have you, are made by a subcontractor to the legitimate brand.

The quality can, at times, be very good and (almost) indistinguishable from the original.

Does WB still run the 'Stars N Bars-type' flag logo?

If so, he might at some point have to change to a new logo considering the hysteria surrounding statues, flags and what not.

produced after the fact without the logo.

Could you add photos if the "genuine" sterile model?

OP can you add a photo of the counterfeit?

"genuine" sterile model" I spec'd the run for Knifwork's. Requested the swedge and
stone wash finish on the Ti scales. So, I know its legit. Received mine prior to sale.
Have #0 (sterile) #1 and #2. From that run.

There were a few Brend Knives Marauders and M2 auto that were sterile for one reason or another, like not making it to get lasered or customer wanting one that way.

I don't think China or anyone else is cloning/making Brend Knife Marauders or any of the Brend knives that were made from 2010 - 2014

I follow pretty much all the knife and sales boards and haven't seen any.

Walter is wrong about any sub contractors making any parts and then selling them at gun shows, etc.

So the OPs knife may be legit?

That would make the most sense that the orig poster has a sterile knife.
These knives are of such high quality a fake would be easy to spot.

(And thanks again Pete for hooking me up with the Stingray on #1!)

That would make sense, but for the OP saying Brend states it is not his work.

"It has his name engraved on the lockbar over travel stop"
That sounds like its legit then. Nobody would skip the blade logo
and go to all the trouble to fake a travel stop. Remember these were mid-techs.
Walter hand ground the blades, but didn't assemble all the knives.

Why did he say it wasn't his work? I wouldn't think you would see clones of his stuff, clones are mostly of the big brands.

FWIW, I don't think he actually assembled any of them.
Brend Knives in N Carolina did all the machining. And then built the knives after Walter delivered the blades...

I just want to give a heads up to anyone that may purchase a Walter Brend Marauder. I've never heard of a clone WB in all my web research on his knives, but they are out there.

Long story short = If it does not have his flag logo laser engraved on the blade and/or pocket clip then there is a very good chance it is a clone.

As it turns out my knife is "not his work".

He mentioned that he may know who is responsible for this.

If I had to guess it'd be obvious to assume subcontractor(s) making more parts and finishing them, selling them at non-retailer locations (knife shows, etc).

So that being said, if you are in the market for one of his knives make sure it is properly logo'd. If you can take some pics and send Walter an email I'm sure he can help confirm authenticity. He was very helpful during our brief chat, and I will be sure to buy one of his genuine knives in the near future.

That is all.

PS: I'm all good with mine as the seller and I are both happy with the final outcome. It's bounced around in a few sales before landing in my pocket so doubtful anyone knew it's true identity. This knife will stay with me so no fear of it hitting the market again.
Could we see a picture of your knife?

Here it is. I want the Stars and Bars logo, which is what prompted me to contact WB in the first place for the pocket clip.

I'm away on vacation now so don't have pics of the other side. It's as expected. I still have my email comms saved with WB and will share via PM if anyone cares that much.

And I can't figure out how to properly post a pic from my phone so that it shows up here. So apologies for the link above

And Walter said that isn't his work? Who else can do a straight Tanto grind like that?

That's definitely Walters work, I remember that run of Maruaders.

Thats NOT a clone, you got a nice one there!

How about the 2 autos below?

This has got to be one of the strangest things I have seen in awhile.

Why would a maker deny his own work and create uncertainty in the market that authentic knives are clones.

If you don't want to post the communications can you at least quote or tell us what Walter said that told him it was not his work? He would know best but...

It's not that I don't want to, I just don't have time or a computer handy to sit down and clean up the email chain for the forum as I'm away for a few days.

He did not go into the exact details but said that he thinks he knows who is doing it.

MCM MCM : amazing Mamba!
I just got the Spyderco version as it's all I can find out there, and I love it... which is also a clone, but at least an authorized one.
