Walther P-38

The P-38 was my first ever handgun. Bought it new from the Rod & Gun club at my base in Germany in 1967 for a very low price. After traveling with it for several years I eventually sold it before returning to England in 1970. Always liked that model.

Hm. Got a P-1, which is samee-samee.

As long as you realize it'll hit you in the forehead with its brass... mine does.. they all do that, I was advised at the P-38 forum. Heavy DA pull but it pioneered that.

I like it but like others better... like the P-08. :p neat historical piece. P-1 is lightweight, with its aluminum frame; a plus. Affordable, too. Wartime "byf"s are obtainable reasonably... P-1's downright cheap.

Mine had issues with the "chamber loaded" indicator 'til I took it out. New/rearsenaled police P-1 likely was rebuilt and only testfired.

There are some great P-38 scenes in the movie "Downfall." :D

i had one in NOLA that i'd bought at a local gunshop (late 60's). i remember it having all matching numbers, a good crisp bore, and neatly placing the hot casings on my forehead, being fairly easy to disassemble and clean, and not being able to hit the broad side of a barn at 3 paces. trigger pull & a bit too loose fit. i qualified 298/300 with my mkIV colt series 70, but just barely passed with the walter when i tried it unofficially over the same course. sold it a few years later & bought a Hi-Power which could drive tacks.

Thanks, Gents. Over the years, I had three P-38's. One was a 1943 "ac" all match! You know the story!! I do like that pistol and the P-08 too. Now, it's a Glock 17---all the way! ;)

With all its shortcomings the P-38/P-1 is my favorite all time pistol!  :D
My old man traded some mechanic work for a nearly brand new Walther P-38 that the guy he done the work for brought back from WW II. He shot and killed the German soldier that was up a tree and took the gun and holster off the guy.
Evidently the German soldier was just reassembling the P-38 or something because the guy heard a click which was what alerted him that the German was up the tree and when he took the pistol off the guy the clip was missing and he didn't have time to look for it.
It was one of the early Walther P-38's and had that beautiful deep blued finish all over it and had the black grips instead of the nasty reddish brown that some of them sported. An absolutely beautiful pistol!  :D

Mike turned me onto the P-1's that were on sale when he got his and I got one as well. It's not as pretty or as hefty as the old early originals but it'll do.;)
