Here's the deal, my friend EDCs a POS china knife. After showing him some of my knives and telling him his fingers were at risk, he's decided that he wants to get a real knife and is letting me pick it for him. His budget is $100. He'll be using this EDC at work a lot for cardboard, tape, plastic ties and shrinkwrap. His current EDC has a 3.5" blade and he's shown interest for the Spyderco Police model. He says he likes the big knives, the bigger, the better. The first thing that comes to mind is a Large Manix. Any suggestions?

Get him the large manix and he'll be as happy as can be. With this knife you will never have to worry about your fingers being chopped by the blade.

Thanks for the input. Oh yeah, it'll be used for self defense puposes also.

That's a good task you have in front of you. I would love to do something like that for a friend.

My suggestions

  • Benchmade 550 Griptilian
  • Spyderco Endura
  • Spyderco Stretch
  • Spyderco Military
  • Benchmade 710

Any of those will also work well in SD I would think.

My suggestions are: Manix or Mini-Manix, Endura, or Military, or ParaMillie.

The Military looks like a good option. I was also considering a Waved Endura, that way he can get a Sharpmaker with it. Does the Waved Endura have liners?

If he likes big and sharp, the Manix sounds like a great option. Other than the weight, it's hard to find anything about the Manix to even possibly complain about.

But..... If he's the kind of guy who uses the tip of his knife as a prybar, the Endura4 might be a better bet. The Endura4 has a much more robust grind than the Manix, at the cost of cutting efficiency. Which one is better? That's all a matter of intended use.

Also check out the chinook II for sd uses. I have carried mine around for awhile now and it is great.

How about $40 for the Walmart S30V Native, leaving enough left over for a sharpmaker so he doesn't have to bug you to keep it sharp for him. The steel on mine cuts a lot of cardboard before needing a touch up.

So far only good recomendations.

(btw what about getting some really big knife (fixed blade) and not so big folder?) (E.g. delica4 + becker bk7 (7") might fit into $100)

Great recomendations indeed. We're in Oakland, CA. My understanding is that people in this city aren't allowed to carry fixed blades-openly or concealed.
