Greetings fellow members. On Sunday I met up with a few of my buddies and we discussed the possibility of having a W&SS type weekend, here in Southern Ontario, so I thought I would post here to gauge interest. Expressing genuine interest is no commitment of any kind, but would help us to decide why/where/what we're going to do.
Tentatively, since we don't have a large private area to do this in, we think a public campground, such as this , would do the trick. I have camped at Rockwood before, and it's a great campground. It feels like being up north, but without the mileage. I have emailed them for more information regarding group camping.
Tentatively, there would be instruction in:
·fire making (bow drill and hand drill, types of tinder, fire steels, flint & steel, etc.)
·primitive navigation and navigational aids
·cordage making , useful knots and net making
·trap triggers
·making atlatls
·making slings
·who knows?
Also:
·atlatls (and atlatl competition)
·slings (and sling competition)
·trade blanket
There would be no community food, so you cater to your own desires. Also there is no cost involved except for campsite fees, getting there, etc.
We discussed the idea of a flint knapping workshop but decided that, since we want to make this an inclusive weekend (opportunity to see different skills and 'meet and greet' other participants), and flint knapping being time consuming, we decided on a flintknapping demonstration only, with an opportunity for a little 'hands-on', although knowing our two knappers, as I do, they could probably be coerced into further instruction with a couple of shots of Irish Whisky.
I guess I should add that since the other members of this 'think tank'
are not as refined as yours truly
, be advised that any idea of political correctness is a joke. And since a couple of them surely must have been longshoremen in a previous life, colourful language could be the norm rather than an exception. In other words, this would most likely work best as an adults-only affair, but if your kids are deaf and well-behaved, they would be welcome. You can check web site, above, to see if pets are permitted or not. If you want to do any fishing, the normal fishing licences would be required.
Anyway, to sum up, at this point, nothing is firm including the venue, so if you know of a better location, please give us a holler. If there is anybody who would like to come and do a related workshop, or even one of the above, please do. This would be a non-paying gig, of course. If you have any comments or ideas, please let's hear them. Everybody that expresses an interest will be put on a group mailing list, rather than bog down BladeForums. I should add that this would probably be either the weekend of October 1-3 or October 15-17.
Radios/MP3's etc. require ear plugs as most of us will be listening to the sounds of nature (and probably the fizzing of a brew or two
)
I guess that's about it. I can be reached at - primitive at sympatico dot ca. Looking forward to hearing from you.
