Hi!

I am looking for a fixed blade with 6-7 inch blade. I like the style of the Swamprats and Esee's but I want it with a blank blade. No coating or colour on it.

I want a quality knife.
Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I'm sure the Snodys are as good as they look, but not quite my cup :)

Also, they look expensive.

Thanks for letting me know about them though.

plenty of sterile Busse/kin blades floating around in that size range. they(sterile ones) are usually coated but easy to strip

It really depends on your budget and whether or not you have some time to spare. You could just buy one you like and strip it. Or you could have a custom made to your specs.

I do think it's kind of sad, and frankly dumb, that so many manu's don't offer their non-stainless blades in non-coated versions. My experience is that tons of people like plain carbon steel knives, and know how to take care of them.

If you like 1095 and don't want it to be coated buy an ESEE and use sand paper to remove the coating. Virtuovice on Youtube took an ESEE 5 and reprofiled it to a convex grind using a strop wrapped with sandpaper. Looks like it came out great, I am concidering doing the same.

Actually, I just finished my project with the ESEE 4 and I used Auto-paint stripper to remove the coat. Worked well but you have to apply a few times because the coating is THICK. I found under the coating a pretty aggressive bead blast. I guess it was to give the coating a way to adhere to the blade. You will have to do some sanding after you remove the coating to inhibit rust. Here is a pic of my finished product. I gave the blade a patina and reprofiled the handle to meet my needs. I also made the scales and a leather sheath for it.

+1! I have only had two coated knives and I stripped them down asap. Much improved cutting as a result...

Looks sweet!

Thanks for you tips.

I just got a DPX H.E.F.T 6 Woodsman, which has hardwood handles and is stonewashed, it's a beautiful knife that fits your specifications. The steel is Sleipner, which is sort of like A2 but with better edge retention (it's usually compared to D2 but they really aren't very similar in composition).

Another beautiful knife, thanks.
I will read up on that model.

Well they are not much like ESEE...they're stick tangs of various lengths...but pretty much all of the Scandinavian knife makers sell blank blades. Roselli, Stromeng, Helle, Mora, probably others. Falkniven I think not. I say where somebody got I think it was a Stromeng or other Leuku style blank blade and made an American-style Bowie out of it...without altering the blade geometry. It was a pretty impressive piece.

Thanks all. I have now had a closer look at the Snody knives. Very nice blades. I´ll have to consider it.
I guess it is my poor english that made me use the word "blank blade". I am looking for a complete knif with
handles and all so what i meant with blank is "no coating or color" on the blade. Sorry for confusing you.
