Hopefully I can get someone with more experience than I to help me shop. There are no places to look at knives here and buying mail order sometimes WYSINWYG.

I'm not really a 'knife person' but have always carried a knife. For the past 3-4 years I've settled on a this gerber LST junior I got for free. It's a fantastic work knife. Since I do keep my knives sharp it's starting to get sharpened down a little. What I like about it is good steel, solid lock, and that it has deep finger grooves, which make it good for serious cutting chores, though it is a pocket knife.

My LST Junior

Anyway lately I've gone back to school and don't use my knife very much at all for cutting chores but still carry. Sometimes I go 2-3 weeks without sharpening it even. What I'm looking for is something a little larger but thinner, and faster opening. Maybe it's called a defensive folder. Something maybe similar to this S&W I have, only not junk.

S&W

I like how this is thin and fast, and has ambidextrous thumb studs, but I don't like the serrations, bad steel, poor fit, serrations, or the slightly small size, and permanent pocket clip.

Good steel is very important and I don't want to spend over $100.

Brand and looks are not important.

Spyderco and Benchmade both have excellent offering under $100. The Delica/Endura or Griptilian series are solid and sharp. Lefty friendly, too. For the righties the Camillus EDC is a classy looking knife. Maybe a little cheaper are pleny of knives by CRKT and Kershaw. Both make solid users. Good luck and Welcome.

Oops...just noticed this was the traditional section. If you're after a traditional lockback I'd say go to Wal-Mart and get a Buck 110 for $30. The Buck 112 is maybe a little handier, though. Also, Boker puts out an elegant but sturdy lockback (for a bit more money).

If you like one handed opening styles, I agree have a look at the Spydercos and Benchmades.
The Spyderco Police is an exceptional knife in my view and one of the only production folders I still have.

The Chinook is also a brute of a lockback.

Welcome.

I pretty much agree with what others have said.

I have two small Gerber LSTs, on one I adapted a thumbstud and on the other I made a thumb hole, perhaps you can get a "one armed bandit" for your LST to make it one hand opening.

I have and like the Spyderco Delica in VG10 steel, black FRN handle.

You´d get many more responses in the Blade Discussion Forum.
