My grandfather had a knife made for my uncle when he was in the army in WW2. It's been in the family ever since I was little, mom used it fishing and dad used it occasionally for butchering small animals. The only thing I know about it is that is was handmade and a file was used for the blade, you can still see lines on the edge and the middle of the flat part of the blade. The blade is about 9 or 10 inches long and double edged.
The handle has a brass guard on it and looks like a k-bar in that it has that stacked washer look. The only leather is on the ends, some of the rings are metal and some are some other material. The metal ones are thin copper ones, brass ones, and larger silver collered ones, nickel maybe. There are also black, reddish brown, and tan ones. They are arranged in a pattern, the handle is very beautiful.
Does anyone have any info on handmade knives such as these, surely my grandpa isn't the only one that had one made and whoever made this knife knew what they were doing. My mother had died a few years ago and it was in her tackle box. It took some cleaning up but it looks nice now. I put bluing on the blade, then cleaned it off and it has a steel gray color that gets a little darker at the tip.
The knifes been used and abused, I thought maybe some of the rings in the handle where plastic but I don't think plastic was that common then and I don't think it would have lasted so long. I wish I had a picture of it so I could post it.
