Hey do these puppies grow in Canada . Are they available in fruit stores ? I,m a fan of garlic like tastes . I just never heard the word ramp use locally .

My cookbook mentions ramps but doesn't recommend them which I thought odd !! I asked a friend in WVA and he said he's eaten them but also doesn't recommend them because if you do you will strongly smell of onion for a week !!!

Depends on how you cook them:thumbup:

Thanks Hollowdweller , I already linked in on that through your excellent posts .
I am looking for some local plant people to clue me in on its availability .

What grows in Canada sometimes has a different character to it . As has been pointed out a cold Dormant period seems to add a spark to Our garlicky friends .

If you find any pics!!!

It is past Ramp season here now though. I found monster patches in John Bryant State Park when I went hiking there after the Khuk Khonvention at Nasty's.

They couldn,t possibly be "wild Garlic" ? As for pics? If Doc Canada has some info he most always has great pics .

Dang it all . I was just at the supermarket and picked up some mussels and a big cherry stone clam . I coulda looked for ramps . I guess the snow peas and sugar snap peas I will steam on top of them will have to do . I,m gonna throw some garlic in their as well . This years crop isn,t that good so I look forward to trying ramps . How would they go steamed on top of mussels ?

They do infact grow in Canada (I know they do in forests). There is a chef here in Toronto who scavenges for leeks and mushrooms. Why don't you plant some in the forest, and see if they survive?

Hey Kevin;

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, been caught up with other things. Yes, Wild Leeks (Allium tricoccum) most definitely grow in Canada, at least in Southern Ontario. They are relatively abundant around here. For pictures, see:

Hope that helps.

Found this on my hard drive, but I don't know where it came from. It's a Wild Leek distribution map.

Thanks a lot to everyone . Hmmm reek of onions for weeks ? As is said I imagine it depends on the person and the preperation . I have had leek soup which was delicious . I will have to try the wild variety .
