want new EDC...

OK, I've gotten pretty specific as to what I'm looking for but can't seem to find it. I love Spyderco for an EDC, especially the flat-grind models; they just seem to cut better than any hollow-grind. I've had the Military and Paramilitary, great knives, but for now I want something else. I have the Kopa, and that's closer to what I'm looking for, but not quite. I love the UK pen knife, may get one just for the hell of it, but I don't know if I'll like it without a lock. So, basically a UK pen knife or something like it with a lock is what I want. I'm thinking just an Endura/Delica might do the trick, but it's not flat grind, not S30V (VG10 is acceptable tho), not G-10 (FRN is a little flimsy), and not a Golden factory model.

So, since I may not find what I'm looking for with Spyderco ... any recommendations?

Forgot about that one... I had one of those new gray ones but I sold it... that's a possibility! Thanks :)

BTW....Endura/Delica is a flat grind, saber flat grind..my mistake

And I'm corrected again! the FRN models are saber grind, the SS ones are hollow grind. Wow, who knew? haha :D

See if you can locate a micarta Calypso Jr, they are sturdier and more satisfying than the FRN models. Only AUS8 but hey, that's fine for a small knife.

Thought of the lil' temp, it's another maybe, but I'm going with a desert tan (combo only) Endura for now. I'm sure I'll get some of the others mentioned soon. :)

I think the titanium Salsa would do very well for what you are considering, but for something a little smaller the SS Dragonfly is nice and has an ATS-55 blade steel.

Oh, what about the Yohimbo?

I had an SS dragonfly a long time ago, se, found it difficult to hold onto. Mine was ATS-55, but I'm sure they're VG10 now. The yojimbo is on my list, and I really am thinking that blade shape will be very useful. It's just such an odd looking knife, even more so than the dodo. I'm not a big fan of the salsa for some reason.. I mean, I'd gladly own all of these and try them out if I didn't have to pay for them, hehe, but since money is the issue I'm prioritizing.

Can anyone recommend anything fitting my likes that isn't by Spyderco?

Take a good long look at Benchmade's Ares (732). I got mine new from a particular auction site for $100 and it is a really amazing value at that price. The axis lock works great, the ergonomics are outstanding, and the blade has a high enough grind to cut very well.

It stays in my pocket for now.

Benchmade 705 is a super awsome nice for the size. I would take it over my Calypso or Delica. It is the best knife I have used so far, I am addicted to the 705 series.

I just got my CE tan Endura. I haven't bought a combo edge anything in many years, but this one I love! The last Endura I had was an SE and I loved it. I thought it was the greatest knife ever. It was also at the time the most expensive knife I'd ever bought, before I had ever heard of a Sebenza, used to think a $200 Benchmade was ridiculously expensive. But anyway, it's great to have an Endura back in my pocket. The tan handle is nice, different, goes with the desert environment that I live in, and I like that it's not a black clip. We'll see how this combo edge works for me, but regardless I'm sure I'll be getting 2 more of these (PE and SE). I LOVE SPYDERCO!

You should try something like a Benchmade Doug Ritter Grip. It has a nice wide blade with a high flat grind. The AXIS lock is superior to any lock I've seen so far. Once you learn how to work the AXIS lock to flip the blade open and shut it's hard to switch to a knife without it.

I have a Mini RSK. It's awesome! It has taken the place of my small seb on many occasions. But, when I was camping my friend stepped in a puddle of cold mud, so my other friend gave him a pair of old shoes from his car, but they were to small. So, he used my mini RSK to make some room for his toes and for some reason the edge has never been the same, even after the Sharpmaker. Guess I'll send it in to BM
I wish I had an SE Endura then when he needed to cut the shoes, it wouldn't have done anything to the edge. Oh well, now I know!

Get the Mini Ritt Grip resharpened - it is a great EDC. Had mine less than a week and am super impressed, more impressed with the mini than its bigger brother.
Am a little surprised you couldn't regain the edge on the sharpmaker, I would have thought that a few passes on the 40 angle would have brought it back to shaving.

Hrm. . . non-Spyerco. . .

Maybe a Kershaw 1436 G-10 Hawk? It has flat grind ATS-34 blade and a semi-skeletonized G-10 handle. It's about 7 3/4" overall, with a 3 1/4" blade.

They're discontinued, but you can generally find one on eBay for $30-$50. I picked one up not too long back, and I've been quite happy with it.
