want new small flashlight

I've had an ARC-P AAA for a few years now on my keyring, trusty little light. I'm just in the market for something new and fun. I've breifly glanced at the new version of my light, and I like it, especially the 80% brighter claim. I may get one of those anyway, but what would be a good 1 or 2 steps up from an ARC AAA?

Also, my keyring is getting crowded. And Id like to avoid just getting a larger ring. Is there by any chance there exists something better than a standard keyring?

I have an Arc AAA P on my keyring also and love it to death. If you were looking for something to replace it you could go with the new Fenix L0P which is brighter than the arc, but only has about an hour runtime. I still think that the Arc is the best keychain light on the market for its price bar-none so if I were you I would stick with the arc.

for super lightweight and 80 hour runtime ... these aint too bad. I ware one around my neck.

*doesn't hold a candle to an ARC AAA though.

How small do you want it? What do you want to use it for? How much do you want to spend?

I am running a passaround on a Peak Ranier right now. It is a regulated 3W luxeon bulb in a body with dimensions similar to a Fenix L1P. It runs on rechargeable 123s and comes with 12v automotive and 110v adapters. It is wicked bright for it's size! A little pricey though. I kept it on my keychain for a week and did not mind it at all.

Price limit?

What I would suggest is finding a light with multiple output modes. Even a small light, if bright enough, can replace almost any flashlight you might want to carry. And the ability to use a low mode is amazingly useful. A bright level will suck batteries, but 90% of the time you'd only need bright for a brief period (if you need it longer, then you should be carrying a larger light). With the low mode you can read maps, find the keyhole on your doorknob, and look inside your knife without blinding yourself.

My new favorite light is the Jil CR2 Intelli. It's a regular direct drive Jil modified (at the factory) with a circuit board that allows you to select 5 different user modes giving you different choices with brightness levels and strobes. For example, I use mode 4 which gives me low/high/burst (really bright, but only for short time use) plus a strobe, and SOS. The low/high levels are adjustable between 20 levels. Plus it can run on rechargable lithium ions. The beam is wide spot with a nice flood. Throws well considering the size. $105, but one might be hard to get ahold of at the moment (it's between revisions).

There's a couple other Jils available, the DD and 1.3W. The DD (direct drive) isn't as bright as the 1.3W, but it lasts forever. Several hours with a RCR2 li-ion (get the TWOJ version) or 20+ hours with a lithium CR2 (TWOJ). The 1.3W is brighter, and regulated, but only for about 1:10 before it starts to dim rapidly. It's larger than the DD/Intelli too. IMO, the only reason to get the 1.3W over the Intelli is price. A TWOH DD would be a great, not-terribly-expensive replacement for your Arc, since output is similar, but battery life is far longer.

The CR2 Ion that GarageBoy mentioned is a great light as well, but different. While the Jil is powerful enough to replace most larger single-cell lights you might carry, the Ion is specifically a flood light. Since I carry a larger light that can throw, I really like the flood of the Ion as a keychain light. Since it's a flood, the beam will be similar to your Arc, but brighter and whiter. Plus it has a low mode. Not a cheap light though, even at the base black HAIII price.

You could try the MillerMods Fenix L0P. He takes a stock L0P and turns it into a 3 stage. He also can turn an Arc into a 2 stage Luxeon I (look at candlepowerforums for more info).

IMO 123A sized lights are too big for a keychain, but maybe not for you. If not, look at the DSpeck Fire-Fly III. It has the same circuit as the Jil Intelli, but it's driven harder so it's brighter (advantage of a more powerful battery). The FF3 is really a jewel of a light. Fantastically manufacturered and a joy to operate. The amount of light that comes out on burst is amazing for so small a light. But it's really more a pocket/lanyard light than a keychain light.

The Orb Raw, especially the new NS (which is even smaller), is the smallest CR2 powered light available. The "raw" part comes from the fact that it's just bare aluminum, so it'll scratch easily. Most Raw owners don't carry it on their keychain. The new NS (nickel silver) is different though, since the material is much stronger. Unfortunately though it's between production runs (I'm definitely getting one next time around). These have 2 stages. Plus you can get them decked out with tritium (like on Luminox watches), which glow brightly in the dark for several years (instead of a few minutes), so you can easily find your flashlight (and the keychain it's attatched to) in the dark. Plus, it looks very slick and high-tech.

Hope this gives you some ideas. Here's a couple pictures with some of the lights I mentioned, so you can get an idea on size comparisons.

Oh yeah as for your keychain delimma, I came across the same sort of thing recently. Too many things on one split ring (even a large one) was getting too cramped. So I took two split rings and put half of the attatchments on each. Works pretty well to divide up load, and doesn't really add any size (makes it a bit longer when spread out, but in the pocket, it makes no difference).

Planterz thanks so much for the time you took to respond! That is a lot of good info. I really like the looks of the Ion CR2. Im not looking to replace the Arc, just get an upgrade. Cost doesn't really matter to me. I haven't stated collecting lights yet, but I figure If I spend hundereds on knives, why not lights?

I found another interesting one, Aunoc AAAA. Stainless steel, claims to be as bright as an Arc AAA. I had no idea AAAA cells existed.

Does anyone have the new Arc AAA thats tapered and 80% brighter?

The Arc in my picture is only a month or two out of the factory. I don't have an older one to compare it to though. It's a great light, and puts out an impressive (for being a single AAA battery) amount of light for its size. The only thing I don't like is the tint. The 5mm Nichia is overdriven some, and the tint has a blue spot and a dirty yellow spill. The tint is the main reason I don't keep the Arc on my keychain. I actually have two, a well-used one and a new one (pictured), and the new one is going to be sent to MillerMods for the modification I mentioned.

Here is a review on the Aunoc AAAA. The advantage is that it's small, the disadvantages are runtime and availability of batteries. The Arc AAA will run on any AAA, including NiMH rechargables if that's your thing. It runs well on alkalines, and even better on lithiums. There are no lithium AAAA batteries as far as I know.

The evolution of my keychain light goes a little like this:

Maglite Solitaire
Photon II
Arc AAA (standard)
Jil DD

I liked the output of my Jil better than that of the Arc AAA standard--much whiter tint and a nicer beam. It was enough of a difference to make me buy my first CR2 light--really didn't want to add another battery. When I got my Fenix I was a little disappointed in my Jil because I like the Fenix beam a lot better, but the Fenix is just not small enough for me to carry on my keys. Fortunately this bad boy looks like it might be what I was waiting for. Don't know what the size is going to be like but it should be a nice light based on what I've seen from Fenix thus far.

Of course I always have a light in pocket besides the keychain light so the keychain light is really only there for backup to my main EDC light and I know that while i might forget my EDC, my keys will always be with me.

Jedi,

I have multiple old and new ARC AAAs. The new ARC really is significantly brighter. I was expecting the new version to be brighter but when I first turned it on and compared it to my old AAA-LE I was extremely impressed. The new version is MUCH brighter. I love it. As others have mentioned, I wish it were whiter, but for real-world use I don't think it matters all that much.

I don't think that the new Arc AAA can be beat as a keychain light. It is small, bright, built like a tank and eats a battery that you can find anywhere.

I DO love my Arc-P!! I am a flashaholic too!! I did pre-order that new Fenix P1!! I so very badly want an HDS light in the worst way!! And I want an Orb Raw......

I'm waiting for the reviews to come out on the Fenix P1, but unless they bomb completely I'll end up with one. LuxeonIII, T Bin, 2 cm in diameter while roughly the same length as an ArcAAA, and all of that for less than $46 shipped.

I don't think there has been a bad light mentioned in this thread, but if the P1 is as good as the other Fenix lights, it's going to be one of the best bargains out there this year (IMO).

The way it looks to me, the P1 will be better than previous Fenix lights, if only because it's being offered in natural HAIII, which should be much more durable than their not-that-good HAIII black. I'm tempted to try one out too, even though I'll have no use for it (especially since the Jetbeam with 123A body I have on order would make the P1 redundant), but if somebody makes a 2stage mod for it, I won't be able to resist it.

I am excited about the Fenix P1!! I DID pre-order one. I think it is going to be an amazing light.

Wow , being on a budget I love hearing about cost effective goodies.
I didnt know those two lights by Gerber existed. I especially like that little Sonic , I think I'm going to go blow some cash tommorrow if I can find one in town.
Thanks for the heads up guys.
