Hello, I'm a hunting guide/knife nut who usually carries a fixed blade custom. I EDC an Ingram shortcut, a Dozier straight personal or a Kauffman #13 along with a Uncle Henry muskrat and a Blade-Tech Mouse. I really love small drop point fixed blades but lately a guide friend of mine has got me thinkin of going retro! We got to thinkin about the old pros and how most of them use pocket knives- mostly case trappers. Being the knife snob I am I'm wanting a Custom. I really like the Back pocket knives by Bose but don't know how long the wait is. The knife specs that I'm thinkin about are 3.75"- 4" back pocket with either D2 or s30V drop point blade, and either stag or sheep horn handles, maybe bone or even ivory if I could afford it. What makers should I be talkin to in order to commission this knife?? Many thanks and if you could post pics of knives that would fit the description that would be awesome!!!

Jerry Halfrich of San Marcos, Texas might be a maker that would interest you. He is a part time guide himself so he would be in tune with what you might want, and he makes a heck of a good knife.

+1 on Halfrich as well, I have one of his LB 5 lockback's on order. He puts a vicious sharp edge on his CPM 154 CM. He is at least a year out though. JB

Thanks Guys! Hey JB! I'll be giving these guys a call. I still am kind of undecided on steel, I like D2 and S30V but forged carbon blade just seems more appropriate.

I'm kinda partial to Todd Davison's knives personally. He's doing a darn good knife.

+2 on a Jerry Halfrich Trapper, here is mine:

I guess I'm +4 on Halfrich. This is his 4-inch Winchester model with jigged micarta. The spring is pretty tight on it. CPM 154 steel, which is wicked sharp.

Here are 3 to Ponder - all were previously mentioned - The Joe Allen, a Halfrich and a Todd Davison. Have also sent you an email. Have fun looking - there are a lot of nice ones out there.

Dang, just when I thought it wasn't going to be that big of a decision, you guys throw more great knives at me! THOSE ARE ALL WONDERFUL KNIVES! I'll have my work cut out for me. I really like the blade profile of the Halfrich Winchester. Thanks!
Jared

That Halfrich Winchester is a heck of a knife, it would be very durable and usable in jigged micarta.

Although it's a lock back, Jerry's LB-5 has the best looking skinning blade on a folder I've seen in a while. He's a serious big game hunter, so knows his stuff...
