I know that I am new to bladeforum and don't see much talk about my favorite knife of all, the First Blood Knife. After reading some of the threads and topics on here, I can say that people seem to think they are out dated. A knife like that, wich I also make, I feel would always be appealing. I don't think it is because of the movie, but because of its ability as well. I am having trouble deciding with the accuracy to look just like a Lile knife, Should I do a serial numbered run of these knives?

Welcome to Bladeorums!

Making a knife exactly like an iconic model associated with another maker would generally be considered a problem. Looking at the knife itself as a valid survival or camp knife doesn't require echoing the original design, just the original functions.

I too agree that making an exact copy is usually a problem, but with Lile's shop no longer in business, and none of the knives made after the first 13 look the same, as well as the other people who are making their versions of the knife, I wanted to offer something that those collectors would be proud of owning. I don't know how to post a pic on here, but if somone wants, I can send one.

Ah, I see. So you're already making these knives and came on here hoping to sell some of them. I get it.

i know for a fact it's not a problem,i own black star knives and that is all we make are the lile rambo knives.
i have spoken to lile's wife, best friend and knife makers who worked for lile for years.
the design is open to the public,it's free and legal to use.i know too lile never had a problem with people making rambo knives.
hope this helps you out...

I am no lawyer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night and that is one heck of a bold statement from a legal point of view.

I AM a lawyer, but since I'm not getting paid to comment on the legality, I won't. But I will say it's undeniably a pretty bold statement from an ethical standpoint.

I should probably ask this on the makers forum, but how does a budding knife maker avoid infringing on anothers design when it's hard to make anything that doesn't resemble something that already exists?

I mean how do you know if your creation has already been copyrighted or something?

bold or not it's the truth.lile never put a copy right own it and no pat ect...
i'm not sure why one would bring the word ethics into this.what in this would be immoral?
i can only speak for myself but if i have all of lile's best friends,wife,co-workers blessing(and i do)
is not all good?there is a difference in disliking what one does vs it being unethical.
who here has not made a loveless, fisk, randall?

i make them so all the knife fans who have always wanted one can have one at a low prices.we love these knives and we want them too,but just dont have a house payment for one,so here is the next best thing.

Makes sense to me. And if someone doesn't agree I guess they don't have to buy your knife right? :p

There is a difference between a copyright and a patent.
Have never made a Loveless, Fisk or a Randall.
Don't believe it's the next best thing.

Feel the need to be deloused.

I think the question would be better asked to Liles wife, co-workers and friends.

Especially his wife...

the only problem i ever "ran into" was the legal issue of the name "lile"-"rambo"-"first blood"
etc....no one but the legal owner of those words/names can use them.if one was to use them, you WOULD be sued from a few directions.
for me it's not about the name BUT the knife.

there is a huge dislike of a lot of rambo knife fans who want that knife but can not pay a ton of money for it.i know, because i get emails all the time from people who are made that people are making these knives and selling them at high prices in the name of "for the fans".yet they charge more that lile did.
so i say to those who do make them.....honor the fan.........a repo is NOT worth the real deal no matter how good.it's not a lile knife,so dont charge more than lile did.

here is a link to show pictures....not to sell a knife.....nothing on my site is for sale yet.
(i'm not trying to break BF rules) want to show pics...

Funny you should say that. On your webpage it says these "knives" you make are $650, without sheath...

well, like i said there is nothing on there for sale.only pictures and info on the knife project.
the price is part of info, but it is NOT the only info.just because there is "price info" on there ,that does not cancel out all the other info on there.
