I'm looking for a fixed blade work knife for doing basic yard chores, and the occasional camping trip. The hardest I'll use it is to probably mallet it through some logs for firewood. BUT, here's the catch...I want one under $100:D I know I can get an amazing peice of art that can split a tree in half for hundreds of bucks, but I don't want to have a stroke if it hits the ground.

I was looking at the Gerber LMF..which is on sale at Sports Authority this week I think (25% off or something). The main selling point for me besides the price is the sharpener in the sheath...if it in fact really works (could be a gimmick?)

check scrapyardknives.com, its a busse sister company. the scrapper 6 sells for about 90.00.

Looks good, but I like the serrations of the Gerber, and the included sheath.

as for a machete; a bit too big for carrying up the side of a mountain IMO:D

Are there any opinions AGAINST the Gerber LMF?

Well it is a Gerber...that is enough for some

Morimoto suggested a really good knife BUT it doesnt come with a sheath

hmmm under $100.00 with a sheath??

Ranger knives Rd7...Should cost out right around $100.00 with a sheath and you cant destroy the thing...Or a Rd6

Another vote for the Ranger RD6/7. I've got an RD7, a great knife at a great price. It's an absolute workhorse, it does all the tough cutting chores around my yard.

How do the Ka Bars stand up to abuse?

I've had 2 break slicing opening up rolls of printing paper. That consist of sliding the blade between the side of the roll and rolling it to cut the cardboard while holding the knife steady. No real pressure anywhere.

I was suprised that this happened, and it WAS over a 18 year span, but still, I won't trust them anymore. Not to depend on anyway.

I still have one left (Ka Bar brand) that I will use at work, but will not carry it. The 2 that broke were Camillus and Ontario and 1 was a WWII MKII Navy.

How 'bout a Cold Steel Bushman. Smaller than the average machete, very durable construction. Kinda looks like a garden tool. Takes good edge. Best of all, I've seen them for as little as $13 new.

Just go here http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html and scroll down about half way and get you one of these #C223 or the #173 knives. You can thank me later when you get it and use it a few times. Its a heck of a worker and a deal at what it costs. Heck get two or three and still not spend as much as any other knife that probably won't cut as well..

Wow, the Becker BK7 looks like what I need (and I just saw it on ebay..but it now for $58 shipped!)

I'm going to search for some reviews now..

definetely get the becker bk7 or bk9. I highly recomend Chestnut ridge knife shop on Ebay. Tom will take care of you. I have purchased 5 beckers from him this month. They all have perfect grinds and they arrive at my house within 3-4 days from purchase. It is worth paying a few extra bucks and go with him you will not be dissapointed. I have had a few Ebay Becker dissapointments this month from other sellers like Cherokee outpost. They have nothing in stock so dont buy from them it will take forevor to get a refund.

The Crewman BK10 looks nice...small (and light)...Good for carrying up the trail without being in the way.

all the Beckers look solid, I just wish I could handle one before I lay down the cash...I don't think there are any 'specialty' knife shops here in RI/southern Mass.

str, nice suggestion,,,I got one for 30 bucks,,and its worth twice the cost, not fancy,,just a well made worker

How exactly is a Ka-Bar built? I'm trying to figure out how it would break as was mentioned earlier...I searched for a cutaway image on the net but nothing..

How far does the blade go into the handle? Can it detach from the handle? Or maybe he meant the actual steel snapped..
