I had this old carpenter’s axe laying around and decided to mess around with it a bit.

I cut the hammer end off it and tried to grind down the back as evenly as I could.

Then I got busy getting the rust off and sharpening the edge. By no means is it perfect but it’s tge first time I’ve ever done something like this. The only tools I have and used was a 6” bench grinder, hack saw, and a work sharp knife and took sharpener with three different grips.

Handle is next

My question is - how does that edge geometry look? It looks like the fattest convex edge I’ve ever seen but I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing. Should I try and thin that edge out?

All thoughts and comments welcome.

Looks like a good kindling splitter to me.

Looks just a tad on the thick side.

Yup.
I wonder what the original use was for these things to have such a thick edge like that.

My concern is trying to remove more material with my only real tool to do it being the work sharp sander.

The blade on this has been 'lazily filed down' to near nothing. Hopefully there is some blade steel left. For you to re-profile it back into something 'acute', such as it was.. once upon a time... is going to take a lot of work. There's nothing new about this (blade angles gradually becoming more obtuse through wear and 'quick' sharpening) but it does show there are a lot of miles on this old gal.
On the other hand as a 'splitter' you're pretty much all set to go since the blade (for sure) won't ever 'hang up' in the end of a round like anything new.
