Want some grab on my Spyderco Forester FB16P handle...

Got the Spyderco Forester FB16P and I like it a bit more every time I pick it up.
I would like to put some kind of checking on the grips to make it a bit more grabby. Sometimes my hands are quite dry and the knife is almost slippery.
Is it a bad idea to check Micarta?
Is there anyone that specializes in this that someone could recommend?
Is there a basic pattern that I could get off of the net, give to a local CNC guy and have a professional product?
Love the knife, but I gotta do something with the handle.
What about wood options? I'm accused of being a woodworker, but I'm not terribly sure what kind of wood would be good for the heat of the desert and the soggy fiasco of Alaska (not to mention the bitterly cold winters), should I end up there.
The best utilitarian, all weather wood for handles?
Thanks for any ideas.

Sand it with some really coarse sand paper. I did this to some really slick Al Mar micarta and it worked well.--KV
