Hi guys,

Need your help.

I started with a Leathern x33 and then:

Spyderco Native FRN
Benchmade 707 Sequel
Spyderco Native5
Mcusta Katana
SOG Mini Vulcan Tanto
Zero Tolerance 0350

I am completely blown away by the ZT. I do not understand why it cost less than some of my others, yet is superior...

Anyway, the ZT is a little big for EDC and my colleagues at work keep getting startled by the thwack when I spring open the blade. I love it, but they are getting worried... lol

I would like something of the same quality, with frame lock, but with a blade no longer than 3 inches. Budget is up to 300$ and I just cannot warm up to Chris Reeve's Sabenza.

What would you suggest?

Three Sisters Forge BEAST. A custom, made by one guy in his shop--terrifically robust, great tolerances, fit finish, etc. Plus Jim Allen is a really nice guy. Blade is 3" long, but .156 thick. Mine is CPM 154CM, but he is currently building ELMAX blades. Email him for more info (and tell him I sent you).

Cheers,
Daniel

Look at some of the higher end Kershaws. They are comparable to your zt 350, but less money still... For instance try Kershw guy for a 1580... its smaller (slightly) than the 350, but are over your 3" mark... They just don;t look quite so scary... Ir there's the leeks. They fit your size requirements, and are very good knives at very reasonable prices, and still feel nice and solid. Great value like the ZT.

(Fwiw I think the 350 is slightly small. :) )

I would suggest a Zero Tolerance 0550. Well under your budget and a fantastic knife.

ETA: Zero Tolerance is a 1/2" over a three inch blade. May not work if that blade length is restricted by law.

0550 is calling my name... Arg... isn't it bit thick?

I couldn't warm up to a Sebenza either. Took years to take the plunge... And like you, i just didn't get it. Thought it looked plain and unappealing. The small Seb is the perfect knife though. I found the tanto blade actually made me like it a lot more -- I know that's not really something you can hear from another member and say "wow, sold!" but I really would recommend it for the extra 59 bucks ontop of your budget.

I would say go with the sister forge as someone already suggested, also the bradley alias 2 is a great frame lock folder. Not sure expensive, reliable knife, and not threatening at all. Also does not need to be flicked opened but it is meant to be.

Don't know how things source in Canada, but my choices would be the following: Grayman Dua, Strider SNG(if you can find one below $300.00), Three Sisters Forge and ZT 550/551. Not sure if you have length restrictions and some of the above are slightly larger than your 3" maximum, but you cannot go wrong with any of them. If I had to choose one, I'd go with the Grayman.....they are as bomb-proof as it gets.

Take a look at the AG Russell Acies 2. It might look too similar to the Sebenza for you but is still worth a glance. It does meet your requirements though: a frame lock with a blade < 3", & price <$300.

Thanks for all your help guys!

I went with the ZT0550 and it arrived today! :)

What do you think? I done good?

I really like it, but everyone at the office thinks it's too big.... who cares what they think, right?

Nice choice man. I loved the 0550. If you enjoy it, then that's all that matters.
