Over this past weekend, I took a little time out from archery (more on that later) to help a friend acquire some native hardwood from the forest for a project he's working on. After hearing what he wanted to make, I determined eastern hophornbeam was the tree he needed. So, off we went, and when I spotted the first one I showed him how to recognize them by their leaves, bark, growth pattern, and favored growing locations. He readied his axe to swing, and I told him "no, you can't cut that one". He was a bit confused, but wandered along following me through the forest. Each time he found a likely tree I told him no, and he was getting more and more aggravated. Finally, I found the right tree, a three inch sapling growing in a tight thicket choked with green briar. He thought I'd lost my mind, until he heard my reasoning. By clearing out some of the green briar and thinning the thicket by cutting that tree, he'd be helping the other trees grow better, and in that way he'd be earning the wood he took.
He looked at the thicket, snarling with green briar, and he looked at his axe, dismay clearly showing on his face. I chuckled and told him to take five while I fetched the wood for him. Out came my little 12" Sher Sirupati, and into the thicket I slithered. The green briar vines didn't have a chance, and quick as thought the three inch sapling was down and de-limbed. He looked at his axe, looked at the little khukuri, and said "#$@*, where can I get one of those?". I've got him leaning toward an 18" AK as a replacement for his axe. Anybody want to buy an axe?
