I'm getting ready to purchase a Greco Cub Companion, a small fixed blade, w/micarta handle, A2 steel, 3 3/4" blade. I mainly need a strong, small fixed blade for hunting ( small game and deer ), and around camp. This knife has caught my eye from time to time and now i've got a chance at one. Heard nothin but good things about Greco's before, anyone have any opinions on this or other Greco's ?? Thanks in advance to all that reply :) p.s. Any comments on A2 would also be helpful !!

Chris Reeve makes his one-piece knives from A2. That's a pretty good recommendation. Greco makes some awesome cutlery. I have two folders and a hatchet of his. They aren't A2, but I would trust any of his knives to take and hold a great edge. I bet you end up thinning it a bit though :) I believe the handle on the Cub may be micarta, like my hatchet, in which case you should like it. A positive, comfortable grip.

Grecos will do you right. They are tough no-nonsense knives and they should suit your purposes well.

I have a Greco folder and a Greco fixed blade.

In my experience they are some of the finest working knives produced.

They are not shiny, and they are not perfectly finished and precision machined. They simply provide a large amount of cutting performance for a comparatively small price. I also do not have any of the A2 knives, but the 8670 ones that I have take a very nice edge. A2 is a highly regarded steel, and I have never heard any complints about the steel performance of CRK's fixed blade.

I did find that I had to scuff up the micarta handles on my fixed blade, as they were quite slick at first. Just breaking the polished surface a bit made a dramatic difference.

From what I have seen the Grecos are as good as and in some ways superior to other "hard use" fixed blades that cost far more.

The fixed blade I have is one of the flat ground models, and it seems to be a good general thickness. Thankfully it does not maintain full thickness to the very tip like some knives do, but instead thins out gradually.

I just sold a larger Greco Companion made with A2 steel today. I felt it was too heavy for a medium size knife (five inch blade), and was awkward to use. However, some people like the heavy weight. For myself I prefer the newer Grecos with thinner stock and flat grinds. They seem to feel better in my hand.
