Want to get first custom tactical folder...

I've invested my money in several custom fixed blades, and semi custom folders like Sebenzas, but never a full custom folder.

Who offers the best knife quality and functionality for the best price? Kit Carson? JW Smith? Bob Terzuola? Kirby Lambert? I've noticed Mike Obenauf isn't making knives anymore, otherwise might have been my first choice.

Looking for something about the size of a large Sebenza or Strider SnG.

Thanks.

I love JW Smith tactical folders. They are around the $450- 550 range for plain bolstered ones.

Terzuola is probably the most available if you wish to order from the maker. If you like the Sebenza, he makes a frame lock version of the ACTF that goes for about 500-600. He also is a "classic" in the tactical field and his folders hold their value. Even when used, they are usually only discounted about 25%.

All pf the makers you list make very fine knives. Out of those listed, I would START with a Terzuola. YOu WILL get a knife from the rest of those makers. Others that I love are (and own.):
Todd Begg
Tom Mayo
GTC
Yuna
Wilkins
Hinderer
Anso
Cucchiara
RJ Martin
Jim Burke
Andy Fitz
Jason Clark
Shane Sibert
Jeremy Krammes
Bob Terzuola I own 5 of his knives. 1 he made for me.
Kirby Lambert
Scott Sawby
DDR
Patrick Nihiser

All of those makers would be good choices. I would also include RJ Martin, Matt Cucchiara, Pat Nihiser and Greg Lightfoot.

Wow that's quite a list of names thanks. I've been browsing what's currently for sale, not finding too much right now. TrueNorth has a lot of Terzuola but they are mostly $700+

I think JW Smith and Pat Nihiser make some of the best tactical knives for the money. The quality of their work is beyond reproach. Another builder you might like to look at is Pete Carey.

Scott Cook Lochsa. It just feels perfect in my hand.

And so readily available.

Frankly overrated, and not worth the aftermarket cost(close to, if not over $1,000 last I checked) and that is the only way that he would be able to obtain one.

Why not recommend an old school custom Emerson while you are at it?(I kid, I kid);)

I realize that this is your opinion, and if you have one, and love it, very cool..... but the OPis looking for something that he can actually purchase, not something that it takes two years just to find at a reasonable price(and that is what it took me).

Unless you want to sell him yours.:D

Lots of great makers to choose from and many listed here already. I'll give another nod to Terzuola and JW Smith. Joel Chamblin makes a sweet tac folder, you'll see them available in the Custom sale forum and on dealer sites for time to time. Brian Tighe makes excellent folders right in your range.

Enjoy the search!

I too am on this quest. I really think that you get an amazing knife from any of these makers. It really depends on what you like.....recurves: Carey, Cucchiara.....more traditional tactical: Terzuola, Dozier, Mosier, and the list goes on. Again, it is best to decide what you LOVE and then see what a maker can offer. Best of luck! :)

Hinderer and Anso are the only two with which I have experience, but I can recommend either with great confidence.

IMO, they don't get any better than JW Smith, and don't cost an arm and a leg to get.....to wit:

That's a real good one that Dave is selling, and the price, as you can see, is reasonable..... J.W. Smith is unmatched.
