I'm looking for a knife to take backpacking and camping, Right now I have a Bravo 1 and am looking for something larger for battoning. I don't know if I want to carry 2 knives or go with one all arounder. I backpack primarily for fishing and I tend to carry too much fishing gear along with the camping gear.

Do you find yourself carrying a heavy blade and a smaller knife, or going with one all purpose knife? In either situation, what Busse would you recommend?

thanks

sarsquash(spelling) is a great all arounder knife. chop's, batton's, slice's, it don't do the dishe's. beside's that your golden.

I'm used to big knives like the FFBM, but I also have a NMSFNO that is a great camp knife. Good size for batoning and chopping and they don't weight too much.

For a dual setup, it's hard to beat a Mistress coupled with an AD/BAD/Culti/GW, etc.

For an all-rounder, it's hard to beat the NMSFNO.

Given that you have the Bravo1, go with something obviously bigger.

I'd go with a TM DSF / DSSF.

Or:

BOSS Jack
Sarsquatch
SFNO
NMSFNO
FSH

It's hard to beat the NMSFNO in its size range only if you're concerned about money. In every other aspect, the FSH blows it away in that size range.

The NMSFNO can chop... but not tremendously well. The FSH chops better. Better than the BWM IMO

The NMSFNO can baton, but the thicker HOGFSH splits better IMO.

I prefer the handle on the FSH a lot better as well.

If I could only have one of my Busses it would be the NMSFNO.

Besides that, like the others have said, you really cant go wrong with a TMDSF, SARSquatch or Skinny ASH.

SARSquatches are a steal right now over on the exchange - you can get one in excellent condition with pants for right around $300.

Doesnt really matter what you choose though for your first as I guarentee you'll be buying a second and third Busse within the month :D:D:D

+1 on the FSH

Thanks for the replies. I am leaning towards a DSSF for the length/weight ratio. The specs seem to lead me to believe I won't mind wearing it on backpack trips. Knowing me, I'll wind up with another model at some point.

If you're looking at the DSSF, take a look at the Boss Jacks too, they're similar and you can get the BJs in a satin finish and with you're choice of choil.

You having a Bravo 1 means you're probably used to having no choil, it so happens that there are no choil BJs. Just a thought.

nmsfno with hand shaped mags.
I don't like the closed handles on the FSH or ASH

if you're looking smaller: BJ- boss jack

Seems to me it depends where you live/fish and what you intend to do with the blade. If you hack your way through foliage to get to your favorite secret spot, then longer might be better (unless you already carry a light machete for that). If you're packed for fishing, you've probably got a small knife on you already.

The Bravo1 is lightweight (7.4oz) for backpacking, but at only 4.25" blade-length, my longer/stronger replacement for it is the Busse-kin SwampRat RatManDu - 10oz, 5.31" blade-length, 10.5" overall, SR101 (not INFI but plenty tough). Not Busse-proper, but an excellent and affordable starter blade. It has a choil, but you can choke-up, and there's width for pinch-grip carving as well. The micarta-handles have amazing grip, and the exposed butt-tang aids in pounding tarp-stakes.
You'll probably want to re-profile somewhat - the edge is very obtuse compared to the Bravo1, esp. as it sweeps to the tip, but other than that... A great knife for the size, and if you decide you want something bigger or INFI, you can sell her to help fund a NMSFNO or FSH :D

I am in Colorado. Mostly, I want a larger blade for batton work, but not so large that it is relegated to car camping. I am not specifically looking to replace the Bravo 1 yet, unless there is a 7" 10 oz or so blade that can stand up to abuse. That does not exist as far as I know. I like the idea of the mid sized Busse/Bravo 1 combo.

I specifically kept my skinny ASH ... I discovered Mr. G was right. It can do a lot without taking up much real estate.

Hmm... 7" + 10oz + abuse = ???
I think the Skinny-Ash is ~15oz, but shorter than 7"... might be your best Busse-bet at that range. The new RatManDeux and the ESEE-6 and Fallkniven A2 are ~12-13oz...

Here's a link to a busse-kin specs page: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=736811

If you're keeping the Bravo1 with you, is longer better for your new blade? And at what weight do you draw the line?
For me, backpacking, I only take 1 blade in the 4-8" range. More than one seems like extra weight for the same purposes, so if I have the Bravo1 my next blade up is a light machete. *shrug*

I always have a small backup knife when I go to the woods, no matter what else I'm carrying. The past couple years it's been the Bark River PSK.

Carrying two or even three knives feels natural to me. One big chopper/camp knife, one roughly 4" blade for general work, and one very small blade that stays in my pocket so I'm never without a blade, no matter what happens.
