I would recommend you getting the book "Build Your Own Hydraulic Forging Press" by Dr James Batson. It is available from the ABS store for $32. It has all the answers to the questions about hydraulic pumps, HP requirements even shear strengths of bolts and I beams. It is a great investment.

I have to agree completely. I purchased the plans through Don Fogg and Tailored the plans to suit me. Worth every penny.

I have the book too and agree it's a superb resource.

Unfortunately, not included in the book is the extra time I would need to actually build the thing... I'd love to build a press but my time is short and I may just put in an order with Bowie instead.

Although I haven't made my press yet I have read the Batson book from cover to cover...........at least 30 times :D One of these days soon, very soon, hopefully I'll put it together.

And I agree Chuck, excellent resource. The only thing that makes it better is Indian Georges addendum. He put together a list of the best places to get all of the parts with the exception of the steel. Part #'s, vendors, etc., for virtually everything needed   Thanks IG ;)

SUPPLIER PART# DESCRIPTION COMMENTS
NORTHERN 1053-C161 BARNES 2 STAGE PUMP -11GPM
2010-C161 PRINCE STANDARD 4-WAY CONTROL VALVE
4051-C161 7 GALLONS HYDRAULIC OIL TANK MUST CLEAN THE INSIDE WELL
4022-C161 RETURN LINE FILTER
4010-C161 SUCTION STRAINER THIS GOES INTO THE TANK
FITTINGS AND HOSES YOU WILL NEED 3 HI- PRESSURE HOSES AND LOW PRESSURE HOSE FOR THE RETURN.
53606-C161 GLYCERIN FILLED GAUGE 0-3000PSI
SURPLUS CENTER 10-1485 ELECTRIC MOTOR I USE A 3 HP AT 3250 RPMS
09 4954 HYDRAULIC CYLINDER I USE A 4 1/2" BORE X 8" STROKE WITH THE PUMP AND MOTOR SHOULD BE GENERATE 24 TONS

If I built another press I would go with a minimum of a 5" cylinder and H frame, going with a bigger cylinder will slow down the ram speed a little. With the setup above my speed is 2" per second. I have photos on my site in different stages of completion. If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me.;)
PS: Your welcome Dave.:D

Thanks IG That can be a big help. I agree with the 5" or larger cyl. I personally feel 6" is the min.

Chuck

IG, have you looked into a pump that delivers 11 gpm with a motor that turns 1800 rpm instead of 3600 rpm? It should be much quieter to operate. Does Northern offer one? My press runs at 3600 and man its loud!

Now we're talkin'! Let's kick this thread around a little while and maybe show some in progrss press builds - what say?
I have a question regarding the 6" cylinder - I have one available to me if I want it, but don't know if the 5 inch is adequate?
Will the 6 inch take a VERY large pump to handle the extra volume of oil, be a rather slooooooooooow ram speed, AND require a bigger eletric motor as well to run the larger pump AND require a larger reservoir?
Or, is 5 inch sufficient?
Seems as though many have suggested that the 5 inch would be about optimum as far as component size and ram speed.
Any help from you "press people"?
I'm a press virgin. Shhhhhh.....

I built H frame press plans from Batson about 10years ago .H frame is the easyed tp build. I used 4.75 in cyl.11 glm pump,3hp motor. It has work well.
It about 25 Tons. IG listed all the parts.

I like the 6" for larger billets. I actually have an 8" and it moves a lot of material. I picked up a press for the price of a 6" cyl. I can draw out a piece of steel faster than.... If I build another, or should I say when, I will use at least a 6" with a 10 to 12" throw. Since I just moved and set up my shop my press does not fit inside (over 10' tall" so i have to set it up outside. I need to rebuild it to fit inside. I am thinking about reusing the cyl on the new press but I like the old one so much I hate to tear it apart.

If you get a 22gpm pump that is rated for 3600rpm and run it at 1800 it will be 11gpm. Here's one from northern and they may even have more http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200321057_200321057

Thanks Chuck for the link. I didnt think it would be that easy! I want to convert mine someday.

That's all good info Chuck. (That pump's a litle pricy though!)
Any way to determine ram speed on a 6" at 11gpm?
And, what motor would it take turn that pump?

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to pass along some useful information and an easy resource for the whole hydraulic press thread. A friend of mine is a blacksmith and bladesmith. He converted an hydraulic log splitter by welding steel plates on the ram end V and on the bottom. He then built his own dies and a way to hold them in place. So essentially for a little more than $1,000 you can get a 20 to 30 ton hydraulic press that with a little elbow grease will work and allow you to make your own damascus, etc.

I'm posting this seperately as I found some useful calculators:

I'm building a forge press just know.
It's 15 tons and should be pretty fast

If anyone is interested I could
make a build tread?

This is a very old post from 2008, bringing this thread back up is called necroposting. Usually if you have useful information it is desired that you start a new thread instead of necroposting
