Want to make a kit with the arrowhead, thoughts?

As posted in another thread, I bought some extra Esse Arrowheads recently to use for a gift. For Christmas, I would like to give these to my step-dad and father-in-law, but I would like to put them in a Altoid tin survival type kit.

My step-dad does have some land way out in west-Texas that he goes to a few times a year. It is way out there, but I haven't been there and can't tell you exactly what is out there. He is a fairly rugged man. My father-in-law lives semi in the country and does plan to go hunting here and there, but otherwise is not out in the wilderness often. (I am 34, a teacher, and new to all this.)

I, of course, saw the idea on the Esse website as well as a few other places. I am putting these together myself. I want to keep it somewhat cheap. I plan to buy little things here and there. I know they may never use these, but it is just better I thought than the arrowheads alone.

So, if you were doing this, and knowing there is no real terrain to plan for other than generic "Texas", which doesn't mean a lot, what might you pick up?

I was thinking, so far:
Waterproof matches (or if I can find a cheap firestarter rod or whatnot)
Fish hooks
Extra paracord
The nylon guts I pulled out of the paracord I wrapped my Izula in (to attach the arrowhead, etc)
Some sort of cotton for fire? (in a small ziptop?) I read something about soaking them in something?
Various cord locks, split ring, etc
The Esse survival card!

Remember the plan is cheap, easy to find stuff, and I will make some sort of divider, mount for the arrowhead. Thanks for any ideas.

i have in my little kit,

arrowhead, small bic, windproof matches and striker, the izula fire starter, some para cord, fish hooks and line and sinkers, a tube with ibuprofen in it and some band aids and a disposable neosporin. you could soak cotton balls in petroleum jelly for a tinder that works very well.

if your in Texas you should come to the esee camp out starting the 23rd of this month, in the Sam Houston forest.

i would go with the rod/striker because it will last longer than matches.
maybe a wire survival saw.
a small swiss army knife
the cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly wrapped in foil.
small signal mirror.
paracord is a good idea.
also jute for making your birdsnest and spare cordage.
mabye buy some aqua tabs and split them between the kits.
duct tape folded 5 or 6 times over itself can fit as well and also could be used to make a bandage or hold arrowhead on a spear.

you can go to a bike shop and get a blown tube for free to wrap around the tin to keep the lid on it. cut it in 1.5" sections to make bands.

just ideas i have used.

Cotton balls in petroleum jelly is what I have.

Probably a good idea to have matches, flint and a mini-bic lighter. May seem overkill but fire is important. 50 feet of fishing line (takes up very little space)

Some iodine tablets for water?

I'm sure other people will have more ideas.

If you mount your arrowhead to the inside of the lid, it will allow you to organize things better in the main part of the container.

Edit: ^^^ What they said ;) beat me to it anyways lol

Wow, quick ideas! Keeping all in mind.

Did see that, but that is way out there. Just not possible right now, but maybe someday.

you can get a 3-pack of the izula ferro rods on KSF for pretty cheap. have one in my tin.

the survival cards that come with the knives are a near perfect fit too. i also keep a P-38 in my kit. makes for a good striker/sort-of screwdriver/fingernail cleaner/can opener... alcohol pads, a few bandaids, couple of split rings and 8-penny nails for snares and such. few tylenol packs, couple of sewing needles...

i don't have the AH-1(yet), but my altoids kit has a small knife/harpoon point/screwdriver i made from the end of a tramontina machete, just laying on top. you could cover the edges with electric tape to protect them, but if your kit's full, it isn't really needed.

the alcohol pads work pretty well for starting fires.

We are going to release a very small survival wallet sometime in October that will contain many of the things you listed including an arrowhead. Mike

Can you tell me what KSF is? I saw the Izula rods on the Esee site, but shipping kind of defeated the low price.

Also, P-38? I think I know what that is, but is that the military multi-tool thing?

KSF = knivesshipfree.com

They have good pricing and free shipping in the states

the p38 is the little can opener tool that most of us carried on our dogtag chains, handy for opening a can or doing lots of little things with. folds flat and takes up very little room.

^that's a p-38. awesome tool. i get 'em for a quarter a piece at the local gun shack. use it at home more than the regular can opener.

and yeah, KSF=knivesshipfree.

Thanks again for the quick help. Need to find some more non-commercial type shops around here to see if I can get these things local and cheap. Like that price you get on the p-38 :)

This is actually pretty fun collecting things. Bought some hooks at wal-mart today. Think I am giving the father in law an old Altoid limited edition tin with the sexy lady on the front.

yeah, my favorite place in this town is a tin building with a razor-wire fenced in lot. guns, a few knives, and a bit of surplus stuff. they do lay-away too.
they might start carrying ESEE's soon. the owner was pretty interested in my izula the other day.
