Want to pick up a new knife and have these 4 on my "want" list. I have a few Spyderco's already, few Emersons, few Benchmades but no Cold Steels. Will just be to add to the collection but will probably carry or use as normal knife every so often.

Thoughs:

Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto Folder
- Gets good reviews
- It is big, and I like big folders
- Like the blade shape
- Coating sucks
- Always wanted one but never pulled the trigger
- Is it worth $70?

Spyderco Manix 2
- Gets good reviews
- Similar in size to several other Spyderco's I own so could just get lost in the mix
- Mad I missed out on the original full size Manix

Emerson CQC-10
- Love Emersons
- Expensive!
- Durable
- Hard to find in PE (if at all)

Benchmade HK14205
- Nice size
- Axis Lock
- Sweet Snody Design
- Gets good reviews for EDC
- Hard to find in PE (if at all)
- Cheaper than CQC-10 but more expensive than Recon1 or Manix2

Input?

My vote goes to either the Manix 2 or the 14205. The CQC-10 is nearly twice as much as the rest of the options. But personally the CQC-10 isn't one of my favorite Emerson designs, though I am a fan of Emerson knives in general. As far as the CS I just don't think it's in the same class as the others. It's possible though that I'm heavily biased due to years of being influenced from these forums, but I see the Recon as generally inferior to the rest. I'm sure all of the options will be able to handle whatever you need within reason. So this isn't a matter of one being able to do what the other cannot do. This comes down to personal preference. My choices in order of preference:
1) 14205
2) Manix 2 (close 2nd)
3) CQC-10
4) Recon 1

I've been eye balling the Manix II as well...it has a nice closed profile, reminds me of the Native, the blade is more conventional.

i bought a recon 1 about a month ago & i am impressed with it. it is super sharp & tough. i have cut through many things with it with no effort. it has grippy g10 handles, & the black teflon finish is pretty tough.it still looks like new after cleaning it with flitz a few times. manix II is another good one,but dont sell the recon 1 short, even though its aus-8 ,the way its ground makes it cuts like a much more expensive steel....

RECON-1 : I had the Recon-1 Tanto folder....but in EDC role I didn't like the blade shape, sold it, and I bought a Clip point one. I can tell you It IS an awsome folder!

Emerson CQC-10: I prefer the CQC-8 or the CQC-13.

Manix-2: I own several Spyderco that I consider better for EDC.... Military, Paramilitary, Endura Wave...

14205: I have no experience with this one, although It looks good...
