I'm just a novice who would like to put new and fancy scales on a folder. I am looking for a good commercial folder that has cheap and/or disposable scales that can be removed and replaced by a beginner. My goal will be to produce a series of different scales that will be substantial improvements over the original.

Any suggestions for an elegible vict...er, folder?

I'm not sure if they're within your price range, but have you tried knife kits? It's entire purpose is to put together a a knife with custom scales and pins. You may use any material that you want, and I'm sure that some of them use screws intead of pins, so that you can change up the handle material as you see fit.

Otherwise, you may want to check with The Toolshed part of the forum.

Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I have already considered the kits. However, I am not impressed with the quality of bearings and the variety available. While I will probably go the kit route at some point, I would also like to increase my options to include commercial folders whose qualities are better known. The other advantage of commercial folders is that I can try them before I buy them.

I can't really help you on commercial folders, but I can put up a few good words for the knife kits. Firstly, they will be the best chance you have at accomplishing what you want. Also, most people who own them agree that it's some of the best proverbial bang that you'll get for your buck. They hold up amazingly well compared to other knives in their price range, and sometimes better.

Otherwise:
Do a bit of googling on the major brands and maybe you'll find something. Spydercos, red Benchmades, Bucks, Gerber Knives, etc. should all have some sort of folders that are held together by visible screws.

Edited to add- if you're unhappy with any part on any knifekit knife, you have the ability to replace it. Phosphor bronze washers, better bearings, etc.

Hi gunovice, Have you gone to Jantz http://www.jantzsupply.com/ and looked at their folder kits? They look like pretty good quality to me, Titanium or Stainless Liners,Stainless over VG10 Blade Steel.Overall I think they are some darn good looking kit knives for the money. Jantz/Koval are really good people to deal with, give them a look if nothing else.BTW,click the catalog on their homepage for a downloadable catalog, the folders I reference are on pg. 1

I can tell you that Darrel Ralph's kits on knifekits are good quality kits.I've seen a lot of them made and customized and they will stand with any commercial knife. You have full control over the scales, final shape, embellishment, and such. There is no better way to get started for many people.
