what's with all the super specific price points when people want high quality? shouldn't you want certain features first, and maybe have a limit on how much you'll spend to get it?

you know the posts, people who say they are looking to spend $400-$475, but don't talk about size, ergonomics, materials, or if they do, only in very basic ways... is it just jewelry at this point?

I mean, I think most of us realize we can get a spyderco or ZT with often better materials and great fit and finish for half that cost compared to many "mid tech" knives. but I understand if you want the certain mid tech design features. but only understanding wanting to spend high dollar amounts with not one clue of what you actually want to use is a bit absurd, no?

is it out of line to recommend a $150 folder when they ask for "more". or should we just humor them by recommending high priced knives, when in reality they probably would have been more happy with a Sage or something?

Well, since you have a hard time making decisions, just send me the money, I'll pick out a knife for you and send it to you!

It's probably because they don't know much about knives in the first place or just haven't been reading around much. Anyone who's been on this forum for at least a month has a wishlist of 10 or so knives that they want.

Ha, yeah, you see threads like that all the time. Even more of the "Best knife for $10" threads. I have been looking casually for a custom folder, about 10 on my list. :D

well, I totally understand the "best knife for cheap"threads. those are logical. since it's so easy to find horrible knives in that price range. you might not have too many specifics to offer at that price point other than reasonable edge holding, and a build that won't fall apart.

once you get into the few hundreds of dollars most knives are at least of decent quality, even if they are often outperformed by much cheaper spydercos. so I just am trying to understand the mindset of people who don't want any specific quality, features, or design, they just want to spend a lot of money for the seemingly sole reason of spending a lot of money.

I think people who dont know alot about knives assume that if they spend that money they are gonna get something superior than the average spyderco. Which in some cases is true and some its not. The other reason might just be to see if there is something out there around that range that they haven't seen.

Recommendation threads on this forum are always a mess regardless. People rarely ever read the OP's criteria. There was one the other day when the OP said they wanted to buy a Spyderco and people were suggesting Kershaws, etc.

in that regard I often play devil's advocate. for instance someone says they want a really thick folder, something they can carve tent pegs with, and do other wood processing without risking damaging the knife. so I will often recommend quite thin folders and clarify that they will handle every task mentioned much better than a thick knife would. but it sometimes pisses people off...

Right now that will get you a sprint run Spyderco green handled Paramilitary in the exchange area!!!!:D
