I'd like to try my hand at making a leather pouch sheath for my Mora to replace the tacky plastic one that it comes with. I've read lots of tutorials online about how to do this, but I haven't seen much advice about where to get materials. I'm a budget-type person and I'm not planning to make lots of sheaths, so I'd like to know where to get leather, thread and needles at a reasonable price.

Can one do a simple sheath like this for $20?

You can get leather working goodies at Hobby Lobby. Since you are just starting out, you should be able to keep yourself busy with what you find there until you want to get more better stuff.

I'm just starting to learn to make sheaths. I went to Hobby Lobby and bought a bag of scrap leather for about $5. They sell tooling stamps, needles, thread etc as well. I have made about 4 decent sheaths so far. Not trying to make the "ultimate" sheath yet..... just learning the basics.

I live in the Atlanta area and there is a Tandy leather store here that teaches a leather class on Saturday morning. I plan to take their class tomorrow.

Bottom line is that you can get a bag of scrap leather and some needles and thread from Hobby Lobby for maybe $10 total and make several sheaths.
