Howdy folks! Okay, let me explain that I have just received one of the BEST fitting knives I've ever held, a Little Hen Knives LHK model, and I have come to a resounding decision: I am TIRED of slim handled knives. I never knew how nice a big, fat handle could be until I got my LHK. I've got a pocket skinner coming from George Tichbourne, and I'm looking forward to that knife as well because the handle is a bit over an inch wide. I know that slimmer knives don't print as much, and that slender is the tactical way, but opening my mail, and other mundane chores around the house and yard doesn't require me to have some super mall ninja tac knife. I would much prefer to have a knife that fills my hand, and that means something thats fat. I know that the Strider/Buck knives are supposed to be pretty fat, but are there any others? I suppose there's the Mini-Grip, but I'm not sure. I don't live near a lot of knife stores, and I need something in the 3" range. The fattest I've heard of are the Marzitelli designs, but I'm not sure about that. Lets recap and see what you suggest:

Steel: 440-C and better
Blade Length: 3" or below
Handle material: Don't care
Needs to be hand filling though. More contoured so its rounded a bit.

Is there anything out there like this? Thanks!

Sincerely,
Anthony

Buck/Strider and Griptilians are the most hand filling factory knives I've held. B/S is more squared off, grip is rounded off.

i handled Spyderco's Lil Temperance, and it filled my hand beautifully... much better than the very slim profile of my Calypso Jr...

You might look at the Cold Steel Ti-Lite, which isn't an inch thick, but it is quite a bit thicker than a Dominator or a Sebenza. And it is nicely rounded.

The steel isn't that great, but you might look at a buck 112. I have a 110 and that has a fat grip alright.

the CRKT lightfoot M-1 has a HUGE handle. It is larger than the BS 881 (I have/had both).

It is a tad over 3" though, but close. I dunno if this breaks your criterion. I also don't know what you mean by "440C steel and better." Aus 8, 440C, ATS34, S30V, etc. etc. all have their own merits IMO...

Hope this helps.

What about the Kopromed Folding Hunter available at World Knives. It's model 23 with Deer Stag scales. A little long for your specs...but the handle looks quite hand-filling.

I've been thinking about getting one of these for over a year. I really need someone to buy one...try it out...and write a review of it here. You could be just the guy for the job.... :D

The Lil' Temperance handle is pretty thick: Just under 14mm, not counting the clip.

The Chinook definitely has a nice hand-filling handle too. It's a little thinner: A bit under 13mm.

I second the CRKT M1. It has one of the best hand-fitting handles on any knife I've held, probably almost as well fitting as the Lil' Temperance. I'm looking forward to the Cruiser from CRKT. There is supposed to be an all black model with the aus-8 steel coming out soon. Also, there the SOG Sidewinder, it has some fat handles. There is one that pops up on the For Trade forum quite often.

Chase from Chax knives can make scales for just about any benchmade. He has 3/8 inch canvas micarta scales that would make a folder over an inch wide with the liners. In that way, you could pick a knife that is "perfect if only it had a thicker handle" and make it exactly the way you want it. If you're not happy, he's quick to fix it. The turn around time is amazing, (in house about a week or so) and the price is right (IMHO). He's a great guy to work with too.

I second Chax if you want custom scales. He made some carbon fiber scales for my BM Ares. He does make custom fixed blade knives as well.

Or, if you can deal with a blade just 1/3" over 3" there is the Benchmade 690 with its very nicely sculpted carbon fiber and rosewood handles.

MOD CQD Mark II, plain edge or partially serrated. Not only a nice fat handle, but all sorts of grip inserts and projections to make it lock right into your hand.

The 154-CM blade is 3.25". If you want a larger knife some day, you can get the CQD Mark I to go with it :)

Take a look at a small Laguiole. They have very wide handles for their length.
