My idea of an ideal knife would be a large tanto blade (~ 10 inches) with a 1/2" curved blade. It should also be as strong as heck; able to chop wood, dig a hole, etc.

The Cold Steel Magnum Tanto IX looks perfect, but I don't know how much abuse it can take. It's 3/16" in either SAN MAI III or Carbon V. The archives seem to lean toward Carbon V for strength.

Any information on the Cold Steel, or other suggestions?

Too bad that Strider doesn't make a curved blade.

Two final things: I'll sacrifice some blade lengh for strengh, and (most importantly) I'd like to keep the price below $300.

Mikul, SPEC PLUS (Ontario) makes a hi-carbon tanto survival knife with a 10 inch epoxy powder coated black blade and a Kraton handle. It retails for like $70, might be just the ticket for you.

Mikul, had one of the Ontario's 10" Tanto, and it's a rugged cookie, carbon steel so you'll need to keep it clean, but it takes a nice edge and is tough! I chopped a lot of branches, dead fallen hardwood and it worked great, the bevels are not too steep so it's not a great slicer but it's a dooer.

Hope that helps, also had the Cold Steel Recon Tanto and that's not as big as you are asking for, but it also is tough. Just for giggles I turned over our burn barrel, 55gal drum, and stabbed several holes into it with the Recon Tanto, no point damage, scrapped the black coating a little. At our church one night we had a work night and they needed to modify a metal bucket but cutting a notch on one side, took the Recon Tanto out, my pastor raised his eyebrows just a little, and proceeded to hack into this pail, it had a rib around the top and after I chopped through it and cut down about 5 inches then folded over the flap, everyone wanted to see the knife. No damage, they were impressed, it's made of the Carbon V stuff and also needs to be kept clean or it'll rust on you.

Hope that helps some, good luck in your search!

(just got myself a Don Fogg Tanto that is pretty snazzy, but being a higher dollar knife I wouldn't do the stuff listed above unless it was a life or death situation, so I wonder what I'll do with it?) Oh well, I know it'll handle any thing I throw at it, as it's hand forged and clay tempered, nice traditional tanto.

The Don Fogg sounds beautiful, although I don't blame you for not wanting to torture something so pricey.

Any pictures of it, just for the drool factor?

His Osoraku-Zukuri style tanto is gorgeous.

Well since you asked, didn't have to twist my arm too much, here is a scan of the knife, blade is about 7" and about 1/4" thick, 1086 steel I believe, cord wrapped handle and the little Cherry blossom that signifies a Don Fogg knife,

Nice eh?

I have not encounted a tanto I liked for chopping. All that I have had or seen are too light, including the all of the CS and Spec plus. Chopping wood is not really hard on a knife and most tanto's will handle it without difficulty.

If digging and chopping are a primary concern, the khukuri or large bowie is much better.

Mikul, take a look at the TOPS Anaconda 9.
Designed by Ron Hood, this boa can chop, is
extremely durable and is easily sharpened.

Mikul,

If it is choping you want then I have to agree with those who recommended a Khukuri.

If you are set on an "indestructible" Tanto then I would recomment the Cold Steel Recon Tanto. Like previously mentioned it is a little smaller than what you are looking for but you won't regret it for a second. I honestly doubt you could break this knife unless you use it for something that is just absolutely absurd(like trying to jack up an 18 wheeler full of lead elephants

Get a Nordooh from Rob Simonich. It's got some belly to it, and it's super strong. But his waiting list is pretty long now.

Thanks all for your suggestions. You all have seen more knives that I have heard of.

The Anaconda and Nordooh are both excellent knives, but miss the one detail that I love: the traditionally curved blade. It's a shame that is what is holding me up because that is the one feature that I want that has no basis in function.

A bowie or khukuri fits the functionality bill perfectly, but I can't see myself with one. I've considered a Strider MH for pure function, but it's pricey for what it is.
