I read the rules for the exchange section which state that basic members and registered members can post in the For Trade and Wanted to Buy sections, but they are listed as Private and I see no threads when I visit those sections. Is there an additional requirement, such as time or post count which must be met first?

As a registered user you can only see the thread you started, this is to curtail the sales abuse by those without paid memberships.
The forum is full of want to buy threads.

From that forums header:

"Anyone may place new ads, but only Gold & higher memberships may reply"

OK, so it's by design. I mistakenly thought that since I couldn't see any threads there that I wasn't allowed to post there. Thanks!

The details are there if one reads them. ;)

I read the rules thoroughly. They said "You may post" but they didn't say that those sections would be totally devoid of threads except those which you have posted. I've been on many, many forums in my time, and the default case when I see "Threads: 22,013" in the forum description but no threads when click on it is that I am locked out of that section, so the setup here is really not intuitive.

The rules are not intuitive until you are familiar with all of them. Once you understand the implications of different permissions for different levels of paid membership, they are clear.

Rules are supposed to be explicit, not implicit. Based on my experiences with other forums, the implications were about as clear as mud. And intuitive is better than not.

Frankly, we don't see most new members making any effort to read the rules. After they've been here a while, they get familiar with rules that effect the forums that interest them. That's cool.

But it is a big website and it does need the complexity that grew up around what members want to do. There are explicit rules and explanations and Tech Support to ask about anything unclear. We do joke about the best way to hide information is to put it in an announcement or sticky at the top of the page.

It works for most of us. As the man said, "there is no royal road to geometry".
