Hey folks, my name is Allen Surls and just wanted to take a second and introduce myself. Andy has so generously offered to allow me to put my name out here on his forum. The knifemakers community is like no other. I have never been a part of such a great group of artisans, who without hesitation, offer their time, knowledge, and advice. Andy is truly an asset and ambassador of this community and I am truly grateful for the assistance he has provided me in the short time I have known him.

I started this endeavor in March of 2012 while I was going through a difficult time in my life. One Saturday morning, I found myself having the urge to make a knife, next thing I knew, it was 1 am and still going at it. I showed my progress to a few friends, then suddenly they were all asking for one for themselves. Then friends of friends appeared and so on.

I started with simple blanks and files, turning over to bar stock and investing in better equipment and materials this past May. I primarily use 440c (yes, I know, there is an unfortunate disliking of this wonderful steel, but I hope to help in some way to rebuild it's name). I am looking to expand into some O1, CPM154, D2, an others soon and I already enjoy using ADS Damascus when needed.

The support I have received from friends, family, WAS Knives supporters, and the tutelage of Scott Davidson (Solid Rock Knives) and Andy Roy has been amazing and I am forever indebted! Without a doubt, the people who have given me the strength, support, and encouragement for this endeavour are my amazing wife and three wonderful children, without them, I am lost. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Please feel free to swing by my Facebook page, www.facebook.com/WASknives and here are a few of my recent knives to come off the bench. I create each of my knives by hand, from the profile, to the grind, to the hand-stitching of my leather sheaths. The only part of the equation that I don't do, is the heat treat. I will add this process to my shop once I am at the point of purchasing an oven. Thank you in advance for your support and advice!!

Guys, please welcome Allen to the forum. I love teaching knifemaking, and I am blessed to live in a state like GA that is swimming in knifemaking talent. Allen came by on Friday and again on Monday to get some visual pointers on parts of the process. During the weekend, he made a knife using what he had learned and it was very nicely done. Its always great when someone is a DO-er and immediately tries what you've proposed. Thanks for stopping by Allen.

Welcome Allen!

I really like the tapered tang wharnie! The handle looks like it'd be really comfortable. Nice work!

welcome allen

bunch of nice knives you've made..#2 takes the cake for me

Welcome Allen! Very nice work man, love the bolstered stag, and that Wharnie is really sweet too.

Careful Allen, there's some deep water out there and no PDF's. Thank goodness there's a great bunch of lifeguards around.
Nice work.
You're welcome to venture over to the dark side try a hammer and fire. Come up to Trackrock end of March.......we got candy....
Several of the guys from here tend to show up.

Hi, welcome to BF, the best corner on the net.

Love the wharncliffe. I've never really wanted to live in Georgia until now. Don't get me wrong, I've spent time there and it's a lovely state to be sure. :)

Don't forget to drop by the Maker's forums. Just another excellent cast of characters that are always willing to teach what they know.

Welcome Allen
I love the Wharncliffe and the Skinner , you do fine work .I hope I can purchase one of your knives soon . How about a bushcrafter in blue kirinite ? Let me know.
:D

Now you know he did not get out of my shop the first time without me mentioning TR.

Most of the guys here aren't gonna believe you come to TR. You coming up early to play a little?

Thank for all the nice welcomes and comments!
Here is the deal on the wharncliffe, been torn on keeping it being that it was the first tapered tang I made and I was planning on using it for one of my 3 knives for the upcoming Georgia Knifemakers Guild meeting. I have decided I will sell it as long as the buyer can wait for me to ship it after I a juried at the meeting Feb 8th. The price is $190 shipped CONUS, first "i'll take it" gets it!

Thank you once again for all of the warm welcomes and I am truly proud to be a part of such a great community!
