Wanting a spear, but not sure which one

Due to recent developments I find myself desiring a good spear. Of the available offerings, three look appealing on the basis of aesthetics. The classic leaf spring spear, the european spear, and the boar spear.

Hunting isn't an intended use, having a good spear is simply desired.

The leaf spear is the smallest in terms of length and weight at 81" and a little over three pounds, european at 84.5" and 3.25 pounds, and the boar spear is the largest at 89" and 4.25 pounds.

I want the boar spear because of reach, and I really like the design of the head. But the Cold Steel site specifically mentions the shaft is 1.5" thick, while not mentioning the thickness of the other two. This isn't a problem since I can easily wrap my hand around a piece of PVC pipe thicker than that, but it makes me wonder about the thickness of the other two.

All three models are approximately the same price at the big river store, so it's really hard to select which one should be the one to get.

A thing to think about when you are looking at spears from an aesthetic viewpoint is the socket. The original CS spears all have a wrap-around socket as opposed to a fully enclosed socket. It sounds like you are looking at the Man At Arms line, and I believe that they are fully enclosed but it would be worth inquiring further if it is going to bug you. Boar spears are almost always thicker than other spears, since they are not designed as throwing weapons at all. It sounds like you should just go with the boar spear because that's what is appealing to you, especially since throwing isn't an intended use.

The Man At Arms Euro Spear looks like it might be the best for your purposes. Some early reviews were pretty negative, but it looks like CS has addressed the issues people complained about (excessive "waviness" in the blade finish and bends in the blade).

The more I look at the boar spear, and what it looks like from the back, the less I'm certain of it. I know that the design is solid, that it's constructed in a way that makes it durable and such, it's just a little jarring to look past the front of it.

I'm still interested in it, but it's now being tempered by the european and lance point models that are available.

I do like the blade profile quite a bit on that one. And the current production ones appear to be quite solid in terms of fit and finish.

Two weeks and I'm no closer to figuring things out. In fact now the Lance Point and the Winged Spear have been added to the list of possibilities.
