Wanting an other BM EDC

I have some great BM but most of them are bigger. No thing wrong with that but am wanting something smaller around 7.25 to 8" overall length for a more gentlemanly EDC. Here is what I have seen: 530, 13150-1 Mini Hardtail, and the 943.

I like the 530 but when I handled one last it was so light I was afraid that I would break it during use. Probably all in my head.

The Mini Hardtail is sweet but not really a gentleman's carry in my opinion. I may get it anyway.

Last is the 943. I think it is the overall favorite but I don't really want to spend that much money. I do think the 943 would be worth it because BM has such high standards. Still, that is a lot of money.

If I have overlooked any knives let me know! I want to hear from you guys!

My next BM will be a 707, and I'll get someone to do custom handles for it, like micarta. That is, once I run into some cash.

You can't go wrong with the 943, it is spendy but just about perfect for EDC. Like others have said the 707 is nice as well, shorter blade but wider than the 943.

I agree with you on the 530, I returned mine immediately.

I do like the 746 but it is larger than what I am looking for (I don't say that very often). The Mini Grip, 707 and 586 are smaller than what I am looking for. I really want a blade around 3.25" on this knife. Should have said that in the first post, sorry.

I was in a knife store and asked what the clerk was carrying. He handed me a well used 530 and I thought: "So light! This must not have liners. Better had it back before I break it." I am not hard on knives but I was seriously afraid of snapping the handle in half somehow.

You're looking maybe for the Nagara. It's available online for about $55 shipped, feels great, good looking, nice practical blade shape, kind of reminds me of a Mora, perfect 3.25" blade and proportions. Definitely a different option than your typical G10-sporting Axis Benchmades, trim and a joy to own and use. I do have to live with the Harley logo though.

Get a Rant so I can live vicariously through you. ;):D

Make that a Rift.

The Nagara looks nice but I am not a fan of Chinese knives. Other than that it is a very good suggestion and right in line with what I am looking for.

The 300SN could be an option but I would want to handle it in person before dropping the coin.

WWWHHHAAATTT???

You need to find a 960. 3.125" s30v blade, Axis lock. If you can stomach the Harley Davidson markings, I know where you can get one for $80, and you can polish off the H-D logo. PM me for info, as they are not a site sponsor and I can't post a link to it.

You need a 940, it's worth every penny.

I can't PM. Would an Email work? Also, is the 960 you are talking about combo edge?

actually, yes, it is CE. They don't have any PE left. There is one other that might work. I know you think that 3.4" is too long, but you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference between 3.4" and 3.25" by the naked eye. Email is fine by me.

In reality, the 530 really is what you are looking for. The knife is tougher than you think, even though it is so light and thin. Besides, you want it for -- as you said -- "more gentlemanly carry." Just how hard on a knife are you when you're dressed up??

I did say that 3.4 is to long but I was looking at a model 746 when I said that. I wear a shirt and tie with slacks to work every day. This knife will be accompanying me to work and it will have to cut plastic straps, slice corrugated cardboard boxes (up to 2 layers) and cut twist ties. Can the 530 handle all that?

I appreciate the help.

Twist ties meaning the metal wire twist ties? Not the best thing to cut with a blade, but Benchmade does a great job with their heat treat of 154CM. The 530 can handle all that stuff.

Sorry, I meant zip ties. No metal, just thick plastic.

Edit: Does the 530 have full liner or just partial?

zip ties: easy.

the 530 has partial nested liners. That's how they get it so thin. The Noryl GTX that the handle is made of is really tough stuff. Same stuff the Griptilian scales are made from.

I have the 707, a few 556mini-grips and just got a 940. I am loving the 940 and am kicking myself for not getting one sooner. This may be the one. Thin, light, big blade, sturdy and attractive package. Another to look at may be the Mini Presidio Ultra which would be a bit bigger than the 707/556 mini-grips.
